BIO: John Philip was born in Wollongong (NSW) and began playing basketball as a junior with the Hamilton basketball program. Philip received a scholarship to attend the Australian Institute of Sport (Canberra) in 2000. He spent two years year there and played for the program’s state league team (2000, 2001).

NBL EXPERIENCE

John Philip made his NBL debut with the Wollongong Hawks at 21 years of age. He went scoreless in his first NBL game.

John Philip played five seasons with the Wollongong Hawks. He averaged 3.6 points, 1.4 rebounds, and 0.3 assists in 109 NBL games.

STATE LEAGUE EXPERIENCE

AIS (2000–2001), Illawarra (2003–2006, 2008), Knox (2009–2013)

Philip joined AIS for the 2000 state league season, beginning a two-year stint that continued in 2001 and overlapped with a group that included Rhys Carter, Ian Crosswhite, Jacob Holmes, Luke Schenscher and Oscar Forman.

Philip joined Illawarra for the 2003 Waratah League season, moving into the Seahawks’ senior men’s group after his AIS stint.

Illawarra kept Philip through the 2004 and 2005 Waratah League seasons, with his multi-year Seahawks run building into a larger scoring role by the middle of the decade.

Philip continued with Illawarra in the 2006 Waratah League season, earned Waratah Men’s All Star Five selection and finished as the national ABA men’s leading scorer at 31.1 points per game.

Philip returned to Illawarra for the 2008 Waratah League season, with his final Seahawks game coming against Central Coast in May 2008.

Philip joined Knox for the 2009 SEABL season and helped the Raiders win the SEABL championship, scoring 19 points on 77.8 percent shooting and making four of four three-pointers in the 125-98 Grand Final win over Frankston.

Philip continued with Knox in the 2010 SEABL season, contributing to a 97-71 win over Hobart as the Raiders moved to a 7-6 record and stayed third in the East Conference.

Philip remained with Knox through the 2011 SEABL season and was still part of the Raiders’ senior group during their post-championship run.

Philip played again for Knox in the 2012 SEABL season, scoring 20 points against Dandenong in April.

Philip continued with Knox in the 2013 SEABL season, when he was part of the Raiders’ veteran group and played his final games for the club that year.
