Hugh Morris made his NBL debut with the City of Sydney Astronauts on 11/3/1979. He went scoreless in his first NBL game.
Hugh Morris featured for the City of Sydney Astronauts during their debut NBL campaign in 1979 under head coach Charlie Zammit. While he did not play in the league’s historic opening game—a narrow 68–65 loss to the Glenelg Tigers—he would make his presence felt shortly after, stepping into the lineup during the early part of the season as the Astronauts searched for form
Morris appeared in the team’s breakthrough 81–80 victory over Glenelg in Round 6, their first win of the season after an 0–5 start. Although he didn’t score, he added to the team’s depth off the bench during the tightly contested matchup. Sydney’s top scorers on the night were Claude Williams (16 points), Peter Donnelly (14 points), and Brad Dalton (12 points), while the Tigers were led by Steve Sparrow (24 points) and Gerry Clarke (23 points)
The win sparked a mid-season resurgence for the Astronauts, who went on a six-game winning run that featured victories over strong sides like Brisbane and Canberra. Morris continued to serve as a reserve option during this stretch, contributing in spot minutes where needed
Across his five appearances in 1979, Morris averaged 6.2 points per game—showcasing scoring ability when given the opportunity despite limited playing time
Unfortunately, the Astronauts lost steam late in the season, picking up just one win over their final six games and finishing on a three-game losing streak. They ended their inaugural NBL campaign with an 8–10 record, placing seventh on the ladder.
Hugh Morris played two seasons the City of Sydney Astronauts. He averaged 7.1 points, 0 rebounds, and 0 assists in 27 NBL games.
