Each week Aussie Hoopla shines a light on the best Aussie ballers currently plying their trade overseas.

Each week we award the player who had both the greatest impact on the stat sheet and the wins column.

Player Of The Week

Josh Giddey

Current Team: Oklahoma City Thunder (NBA)

Hometown: Melbourne, Australia

Last played in Australia: Adelaide 36ers (NBL20)

After showing up in the honourable mentions last week, Oklahoma Thunder guard Josh Giddy is the clear Player of the Week this time around.

As a rookie, Giddey recorded a 28-point triple-double in an overtime win over the Knicks in his rookie season. This week, he did it again. In the Thunder’s 145-135 win against the Knicks (8-7) on Monday, he scored 24 points, 12 assists, and 10 rebounds to record his fifth career triple-double.

With Oklahoma earning wins over the Raptors, Knicks, and Wizards in the past week, Oklahoma has won 3 of its last 4 games, with Giddy’s production playing a big role.

Honourable Mentions

Jack White

Current Team:  Denver Nuggets (NBA)

Hometown: Melbourne, Vic

Last played in Australia:  Melbourne United (NBL22)

Earlier this week, former Melbourne United small forward Jack White was transferred back to the Nuggets NBA roster following a highly productive month in the G League.

White scored 17 points, 15 rebounds, 2 assists, and a block as the Grand Rapids Gold lost to Cleveland’s G League affiliate, the Cleveland Charge, by four points. This was his third double-double in four games, and after playing in four games, he is averaging 16 points, 11 rebounds, and 2 assists for the Nugget’s G-League team.

With White’s impressive play and Nugget’s stars Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray, both missing games due to COVID-19 this week, he has been recalled to the team’s NBA roster and will get the chance to showcase his skillset against NBA teams.

Another former United star and NBL21 Grand Final MVP, Landale, has quickly become a key rotation big for a Phoenix team viewed as a legitimate title contender.

Coming off the bench, Landale has averaged 7.4 points and 4.4 rebounds over 12 minutes, all career highs since landing in Phoenix who have started the season with nine wins, and five losses.

Landale scored two points and blocked two shots in the closing three minutes of one of the Sun’s biggest wins of the season. The Suns defeated Golden State 130-119 despite Warriors star guard Stephon Curry finishing with 50 points.

Reyne Smith

Current Team: Charleston Cougars (NCAA)

Hometown:  Ulverstone, Tas

Last played in Australia: Australian Boomers (FIBA 2021)

Reyne Smith hit three straight free throws with 20 seconds left in regulation in Charleston’s (3-1) game against Richmond (2-2)  this week to tie the game at 81-81 and force overtime.

Smith finished with 8 of 16 from 3-point range, which tied the school’s record for most 3s made in a single game, and 5 for 6 from the line for the Cougars, who went on to win 90-92.

Last year, Smith made his Boomers senior team debut alongside a number of young Aussie talents to defeat New Zealand as part of the 2021 FIBA Asia Cup qualifiers, where he scored 22 points on (6-of-14 from beyond the arc).

During the last NCAA season, there were stretches where he was the best 3-point shooter in college basketball, but he was unable to maintain that for the entire season. Like a lot of freshmen, he struggled with consistency last season but having put a ton of work into his game during the off-season, he looks like he will be even more dangerous in 2023.

After spending last season with Barcelona and now Partizan Exum had gotten off to a good start to the new campaign at his new home, scoring 9.8 points on average in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague and 11.8 per game in ABA League.
