Mayberry played college basketball at Oklahoma State and Oklahoma Christian, As a freshman he was a forward at Oklahoma State under Guy Strong during the 1976-77 season and came in as a newcomer from Oklahoma City Northeast High School.

Oklahoma State finished 10-17 overall and 4-10 in Big Eight play that season, later adjusted to 6-21 overall, and Mayberry appeared in 3 games with 0 starts while totaling 2 points, 3 rebounds and 1 assist.

His 1976-77 Oklahoma State line was 0.7 points, 1.0 rebounds and 0.3 assists per game, and he went 0-for-0 from the field and 2-for-2 at the foul line.

As a sophomore in 1977-78 he remained at Oklahoma State after being described before the season as a player who could help the forward rotation, although pre-season illness affected him early, and he played for new head coach Jim Killingsworth on a team that finished 10-16 overall and 4-10 in the Big Eight, placing sixth in the conference.

Mayberry played 4 games with 0 starts in 1977-78 and logged 14 minutes, 8 points and 8 rebounds while shooting 2-for-4 from the field and 4-for-10 at the free throw line.

His per-game averages that season were 3.5 minutes, 2.0 points and 2.0 rebounds, with no assists recorded.

One of his best outings at Oklahoma State came in a 127-87 win over College of Santa Fe on December 3, 1977, when he scored 4 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in 8 minutes off the bench.

He also had 4 points and 2 rebounds in 4 minutes in a 94-point Oklahoma State performance later that season, giving him all 8 of his sophomore points in two games.

Across his two Oklahoma State seasons he played 7 games with 0 starts and finished with 10 points, 11 rebounds and 1 assist, averaging 1.4 points, 1.6 rebounds and 0.1 assists per game.

Mayberry then transferred to Oklahoma Christian, where he played under Jerry Jobe and joined the program for the 1978-79 season.

Oklahoma Christian went 27-7 overall and 7-1 in Sooner Athletic Conference play in 1978-79, and the season ended with a 69-63 win over USAO in the conference playoff before an 85-73 NAIA District 9 Tournament win over Oklahoma Baptist and an 86-83 loss to Cameron.

He stayed with Oklahoma Christian in 1979-80 and the Eagles finished 25-9 overall with a 5-3 conference record before beating USAO 67-60 in the NAIA District 9 Tournament and then falling 53-48 at East Central.

Mayberry was the team’s leading rebounder in 1979-80 with 309 boards, an average of 9.1 per game, which remains one of Oklahoma Christian’s top single-season rebounding marks from that era.

His 1979-80 season also brought major conference recognition, as he was named Sooner Athletic Conference Player of the Year and earned First Team All-Conference honours.

His Oklahoma Christian years are the strongest documented portion of his college career, with 1978-79 and 1979-80 both ending in postseason play and 1979-80 standing out as his award-winning season.
