McAndrew played college basketball at Virginia during the 1996–97 season before returning to the Cavaliers in 1997–98.
Virginia’s official 1996–97 roster listed McAndrew as a freshman forward/center from Wonga Beach, Queensland, with Canberra/Australian Institute of Sport as his previous school, and Jeff Jones led the program that year.
In August 1996, Virginia announced that McAndrew had signed late in the NCAA spring period and was awaiting an NCAA eligibility ruling tied to his earlier appearances for the Perth Wildcats, with Virginia indicating he would still have four seasons of eligibility once cleared.
A preseason outlook from the Virginia athletics site noted that the NCAA ruled McAndrew ineligible for seven games in 1996–97 because he had been a developmental player with Perth, while also stating he was allowed to play in Virginia’s season-opening Maui Invitational before beginning the suspension in the regular season schedule.
During Virginia’s Maui trip in November 1996, McAndrew was described as an Australian newcomer from Wonga Beach and was noted for being physical as he adjusted to ACC officiating, including picking up four fouls in 14 minutes in Virginia’s Maui-opening win over South Carolina, after also fouling out quickly in a preseason game setting.
McAndrew’s seven-game NCAA suspension covered 25 percent of Virginia’s regular-season games, and he returned to action in late December 1996, logging two minutes in a home win as the Cavaliers continued into ACC play.
In the 1996–97 season, Virginia’s year-by-year records list the team as an 18–13 campaign under head coach Jeff Jones, and McAndrew appeared in 17 games with no starts, averaging 0.4 points, 1.7 rebounds, and 0.8 assists per game.
McAndrew returned as a sophomore in 1997–98 and again played under Jeff Jones as Virginia finished 11–19 overall and 3–13 in ACC play, with Jones resigning after the season and Pete Gillen later hired as Virginia’s next head coach in late March 1998.
In 1997–98, McAndrew appeared in nine games and did not start, averaging 4.4 minutes per game while contributing 0.3 points and 0.3 rebounds per game as a depth frontcourt option.
