David Leslie made his NBL debut with the City of Sydney Astronauts on 24/2/1979. He scored 25 points in his first game.
David Leslie was the offensive engine for the City of Sydney Astronauts during the inaugural 1979 NBL season, led by coach Charlie Zammit. The Astronauts etched their name in history by competing in the league’s first-ever game, narrowly falling to the Glenelg Tigers 68–65 at the Apollo Entertainment Centre. Leslie was dominant in the historic opener, pouring in a game-high 25 points on 50% shooting, with Claude Williams (8 points) and Ian Robilliard (8 points) also among the team’s top contributors. Glenelg was paced by Rick Hodges (16 points) and David Smyth (15 points).
City of Sydney stumbled out of the gates, losing their first five contests before finally breaking through with an 81–80 win in a rematch against Glenelg. Leslie again led the way with 12 points, supported by Claude Williams (16 points), Peter Donnelly (14 points), and Brad Dalton (12 points) in a balanced scoring effort. The Tigers were led by Steve Sparrow (24 points) and Gerry Clarke (23 points).
The Astronauts caught fire following their breakthrough win, stringing together six straight victories, including notable triumphs over Brisbane, Wollongong, and Canberra. Leslie continued his standout form throughout the streak and across the season, finishing as the team’s leading scorer with 20.4 points per game across 18 appearances.
Despite their mid-season surge, the Astronauts struggled to close out the year, managing just one win over their final six games and losing their last three consecutively. City of Sydney wrapped up the 1979 campaign with an 8–10 record, finishing in seventh place on the league ladder.
David Leslie played seven seasons across four NBL teams. This included the City of Sydney Astronauts, Frankston Bears, Geelong Cats and Geelong Supercats. He averaged 14.5 points, 3 rebounds, and 2.4 assists in 144 NBL games.
Dan Boyce is a die-hard Sydney Kings fan who grew up in Melbourne during the roaring 90's of Australian Basketball and spent far too much time collecting Futera NBL Basketball cards.

READ MOREThe possibility of an NBL expansion team in Geelong has gained momentum, with league owner Larry Kestelman confirming the city is a strong candidate—provided it can secure a suitable venue. However, much like we outlined in an article a number of years ago, How the Geelong Supercats could return to the NBL within 3 years, the missing piece isn’t just a stadium, but a real estate-backed development plan to make the project financially viable. Kestelman recently acknowledged Geelong’s growing basketball scene, citing record participation numbers…
READ MOREThere have been championship runs in the NBL defined by dominance and the sheer weight of talent that could overwhelm opponents before the ball was tipped.
