NBL EXPERIENCE

Sean MacDonald made his NBL debut with the Tasmania JackJumpers at 21 years of age. He went scoreless in his first NBL game.

Sean MacDonald signed as a development player with the Tasmania JackJumpers for their debut NBL season. Although his court time was limited, MacDonald was part of a remarkable “Cinderella” season for the JackJumpers, who finished with a 17-11 record and reached the NBL Grand Finals series. They ultimately lost the championship to the Sydney Kings in three games.

2022/23
The JackJumpers retained most of their roster for their second season, with the notable departures of imports Josh Adams and MiKyle McIntosh. Head coach Scott Roth replaced Adams with Milton Doyle, who proved instrumental in the team’s success, and added Rashard Kelly to replace McIntosh.

Tasmania struggled early due to injuries to key players. Captain Clint Steindl missed time with a knee injury, and Will Magnay was limited due to a lingering foot issue. The JackJumpers began the season with losses to South East Melbourne, Cairns, and New Zealand, sitting at the bottom of the ladder after three games. Their fortunes changed with an overtime victory over Brisbane (90–86), fueled by Doyle’s 32 points and 4 assists.

The team then went on a four-game winning streak, solidifying their position within the top six. Doyle led the team with averages of 17.2 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 1.7 steals, while Jack McVeigh had a career-best season, averaging 14.8 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 1.5 assists. Tasmania finished the regular season in fourth place with a 16-12 record, earning a spot in the league’s inaugural play-in tournament.

Point guard Josh Magette suffered a devastating injury in the final regular season game against Illawarra, fracturing his cheekbone and eye socket, which sidelined him for the playoffs. MacDonald, Kelly, and Isaac White stepped up in Magette’s absence. Tasmania defeated Cairns (87–79) in the play-in qualifier, advancing to face New Zealand in the semifinals.

In game one, Tasmania struggled offensively, scoring just 68 points, their third-lowest total of the season, with Kelly and Doyle being the only players in double figures. Game two saw Doyle deliver 23 points and 5 assists in an 89-78 home win to even the series. However, New Zealand proved too strong in the deciding game, defeating Tasmania 92-77 to close out the series.

MacDonald earned the JackJumpers’ Coaches Award at the season’s conclusion, a testament to his valuable contributions during the team’s playoff run.

2023/24
MacDonald had a breakout season, averaging 8.0 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 2.4 assists in 22.8 minutes per game. His significant improvement was recognized as he was named the Hungry Jack’s NBL Most Improved Player. He played a crucial role in helping Tasmania secure a third-place finish in the regular season with a 16-12 record.

The JackJumpers went on to upset Melbourne United in the NBL Grand Finals, capturing the team’s first championship. MacDonald’s performance in the finals was widely regarded as the best by a development player in NBL history. He was even elevated to the starting lineup for the decisive Game 5, a testament to the faith the coaching staff had in him.

2024/25
MacDonald was promoted from a development player to the JackJumpers’ full roster and signed a two-year contract extension, securing his place with the team until 2026. General Manager of Basketball Mika Vukona stated, “It would be an understatement to say we’re very proud of Sean and his development in the last 3 years. He has embraced everything our program is about, and he is proof of what can be achieved when you buy in and put in the work.”

Sean MacDonald currently plays for the Tasmania JackJumpers and has played 86 games in his NBL career. He has averaged 7 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 assists since entering the league in 2021.

The possibility of an NBL expansion team in Geelong has gained momentum, with league owner Larry Kestelman confirming the city is a strong candidate—provided it can secure a suitable venue. However, much like we outlined in an article a number of years ago, How the Geelong Supercats could return to the NBL within 3 years, the missing piece isn’t just a stadium, but a real estate-backed development plan to make the project financially viable. Kestelman recently acknowledged Geelong’s growing basketball scene, citing record participation numbers…

There have been championship runs in the NBL defined by dominance and the sheer weight of talent that could overwhelm opponents before the ball was tipped. Basketball Australia later confirmed the ban, though the club initially cited “personal leave” as the reason for his absence. Despite the violation, Sydney Kings officials reportedly want to retain Cooks, who remains under contract for…

A second Sydney NBL team is expected to be the league’s next expansion franchise, with Gold Coast, Darwin, and Canberra all encountering significant roadblocks in recent months.
