Cook’s state-league career included a three-season Cairns Marlins run from 2006 to 2008, with the stint building into a 2007 QABL title season. Cairns won the 2007 QABL men’s championship series against Gold Coast, then carried that form into the ABA National Finals at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre, where the Marlins defeated Dandenong 110–98 in the men’s grand final and Cook was named in the ABA Men’s All-Star Five.
Cook remained with Cairns in 2008. In July, he scored 28 points on 7-of-14 shooting and went 12-of-13 at the foul line in an 86–84 Marlins win.
Cook moved to the Mackay Meteors for the 2009 QBL season. He was named the league’s Round 13 Player of the Week and later earned a guard spot on the QBL Men’s All-League Team. Mackay broke through for a playoff appearance during that season, with Cook producing 38 points, 11 assists and six rebounds in the run-in.
