The New Zealand Breakers have signed Paul Carter, 29, to help cover for the injuries woes currently affecting the club.
Carter will become the fourth import to play for the injury-plagued Breakers this season. Recent injuries to Tom Abercrombie (hand fracture – 4 to 6 weeks), Ben Woodside (ruptured plantar fascia – indefinite) and Corey Webster (personal reasons – indefinite) have taken their toll on the club and with a crucial stretch of games in front of the Breakers, Carter will add some much-needed firepower.
Carter has an impressive international resume having played in Cyprus, Mexico, Finland, France and Germany. He had a small stint with the Utah Jazz in the NBA (2011) and Atlanta Hawks in the NBA Summer League (2012).
Carter had been playing for Eurocup team ALBA Berlin but was unable to find a spot in the team’s regular rotation. The 203cm forward possesses a deadly outside shot, is a terrific rebounder and has the size and athleticism to play both the three and the four spots.
Carter will likely remain for the team indefinitely with star Corey Webster out indefinitely having to face three assault charges in relation to a November 30 incident at a Takapuna bar.
Carter averaged 4.5 points and 1.25 rebounds in nine minutes per game for Alba Berlin which is led by former NBA player Peyton Siva. Prior to the Carter graduated from Illinois-Chicago University where he averaged 12 points and 7 rebounds as a senior.
The Breakers hope to have their new star on board for Friday night’s clash with the Sydney Kings.
Meanwhile, Melbourne United is back in the NBL top four after a dominant display over the Brisbane Bullets on Boxing Day.
After being down by six points early in the second quarter, United rallied to run out easy 97-59 winners.
