Neil Pratten made his NBL debut with the Illawarra Hawks on 6/2/1982. He went scoreless in his first NBL game.

Illawarra entered 1982 under new coach Tom Pottinger, keeping most of their core intact apart from Benny Lewis and Alan Yates. The additions of import Alonzo Weatherly and the return of MVP Michael Jones gave the Hawks a strong inside presence, while captain Gordie McLeod, Jim Slacke, and Ray Hannett provided stability. Young forward Neil Pratten joined the squad, making his NBL debut in limited minutes as part of the club’s development rotation.

Illawarra impressed early with a 98–91 opening win over Launceston Casino City before a narrow 87–88 loss to Adelaide City. While they proved tough at home (8–5), road games continued to trouble the team, producing only three wins from thirteen attempts. McLeod’s leadership and the scoring punch of Jones (23.9 points, 8.1 rebounds) and Weatherly (23.7 points, 9.2 rebounds) carried much of the load.

April produced the Hawks’ best basketball, with four straight victories — highlighted by a 125–103 win over Westate and a 106–83 thrashing of Nunawading. Slacke (16.8 points, 5 rebounds) and McLeod (10.3 points, 4.5 assists) controlled the tempo as Pottinger rotated deeply through his bench. During this stretch, Pratten featured in two appearances, contributing effort and rebounding in short spurts.

Illawarra finished ninth at 11–15, showcasing strong home form but inconsistency away. Pratten (0 points, 0.5 rebounds across 2 games) gained valuable experience in his brief debut season, supporting a veteran-led group anchored by Jones, Weatherly, and McLeod.
