As the country and all major sports around the world has been closing due to COVID-19 the NBL1 and all three conferences (South, North and Central) announced it would cancel it’s 2020 season.
It had previously already been postponed until May 15th but the NBL’s Chief Operating Officer Andy Crook delivered an update today which said:
“Obviously this is unfortunate but it is the most appropriate decision under the current circumstances. The health and safety of players, staff and officials as well as the wider community comes first… We also want to allow the clubs to focus on re-establishing grassroots basketball as a matter of priority when the time is right.”
The season was going to be a new start for state level basketball as the league expanded into Queensland and South Australia and announced it would hold a championship tournament between the three conferences at the conclusion of the season.
The inaugural season included teams primarily in Victoria, additionally it featured teams from the BA Centre of Excellence (Canberra), Albury Wodonga Bandits (NSW) and the Hobart Huskies, Launceston Tornadoes (Women’s) and North-West Tasmanian Thunder (Men’s) from Tasmania but this year was set for the league to break new group as potentially the countries first truly national sporting competition.
