“My best dunk was against Chris Munk, the whole game he was talking trash to the whole team, saying he had an NBA resume and he was going to destroy the NBL, so I went up, switched to the left and I caught… after that dunk he didn’t say another word” – Leon Trimmingham discussing his favourite dunk in the NBL.
The voice of AussieHoopla.com Dan Boyce sits down with Leon Trimmingham who had just returned to his Texas after attending the 25th Anniversary of the Sydney Kings where he was named as part of the Sydney Kings 25th Anniversary Team.
Leon takes us through what the weekend was like and the reception he received on returning to Sydney and how he feels the NBL has changed since he left the country in 1997.
Trimmingham was discovered by Sydney Kings coach Bob Turner while playing basketball for Briar Cliff University where he led the Chargers to a record of 79-16 during his time there which included three national tournament appearances in three seasons. He finished his career with 2,023 points, the fourth highest total in school history
The Sydney Kings will always be a huge part of the career of Leon Trimmingham being the team which not only allowed him to begin his professional basketball career but earned him many an import spot due to having “Sydney Kings” written on his resume and in this candid interview he shares his favourite memories of travelling the world playing the game he loves.

During the Kings’ off-season, Trimmingham played with the German Division I Braunschweig Basketball Club, averaging 18.8 points and 9.5 rebounds during the 1995-96 season before signing a deal with play with the Adelaide 36ers in 1996.
During his two seasons with Adelaide, Leon averaged 21.5 points and 7 rebounds which was a dramatic decrease from the 27 points and 11 rebounds he averaged with Sydney.
Although Adelaide were a fast paced, run and gun team like the Sydney Kings they weren’t able to get the best of out Leon and he was reduced to the team’s second unit for most of his second season with the 36ers and was not offered a contract to return.
Funnily enough, that same year Leon was invited to both the Portland Trailblazers and Toronto Raptors NBA training camps.
In 1998-99, Trimmingham played for Daiwa Hot Blizzards in Japan, averaging 23 points and 6 rebounds. He spent the 1999 season playing in Puerto Rico for the San German Athletics and averaged 23 points and 7 rebounds. Leon played with Argentina’s Boca Juniors in 2000 where he led the league in scoring at 24.2 points per game.
Leon Trimmingham’s First Year Highlights
In 2001, Trimmingham returned to Puerto Rico to play for the Santurce Crabbers and led them to their fourth-straight championship, being named Finals MVP in the process after scoring 31 points and hauling in 12 rebounds in the championship game.
Leon also represented his home country, the Virgin Islands National Team in 2001.

Leon Trimmingham still sits in the in field goal percentage, free throw attempts, free throws made, free throw percentage and blocked shots records for the Sydney Kings.
