Jim Town was drafted by the Denver Nuggets with pick #130 in the 1977 NBA Draft.
COLLEGE
Town played college basketball at Massachusetts, As a freshman in 1973-74 he was academically ineligible and did not appear for a UMass team coached by Jack Leaman that finished 21-5 overall, went 11-1 in the Yankee Conference, won the league regular-season title, and lost to Jacksonville in the first round of the NIT.
As a sophomore in 1974-75, he wore No. 44 and was listed as a center on the official roster before moving into a major varsity role for another Jack Leaman team that went 18-8 overall and 10-2 in the Yankee Conference, again finishing first in the league and returning to the NIT.
That season Town played 25 games and started 13, scoring 305 points at 12.2 points per game with 194 rebounds at 7.8 per game and 29 assists at 1.2 per game while shooting 129-for-246 from the field for 52.4 percent and 47-for-66 at the foul line for 71.2 percent.
His 1974-75 season ended with a first-team All-Yankee Conference selection, and UMass closed the year with a 68-51 loss to Manhattan in the opening round of the NIT.
As a junior in 1975-76, he was listed as a forward on the roster and became one of the central pieces on a 21-6 UMass team that went 11-1 in the Yankee Conference, finished first again, and remained under Jack Leaman.
Town started all 27 games in 1975-76 and produced 403 points, 334 rebounds, and 46 assists, averaging 14.9 points, 12.4 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game while shooting 176-for-337 from the field for 52.2 percent and 51-for-73 from the free-throw line for 69.9 percent.
His 334 rebounds in 1975-76 became one of the top single-season totals in program history, and that season he was the Yankee Conference MVP while also earning first-team All-Yankee Conference honours.
As a senior in 1976-77, Town remained with Jack Leaman as UMass moved into the Eastern Collegiate Basketball League, where the Minutemen finished 20-11 overall and 3-4 in conference play for fourth place before making a run to the NIT quarterfinals.
In his final college season he played 31 games and started 22, totaling 503 points, 351 rebounds, and 77 assists while averaging 16.2 points, 11.3 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game, with a 216-for-425 field-goal line for 50.8 percent and a 71-for-95 mark at the line for 74.7 percent.
On December 12, 1976, he pulled down 27 rebounds against Boston College, a single-game total that remained tied among the best rebounding games in school history and stood as the program’s first 20-rebound game since the early 1970s.
Town also helped UMass beat Seton Hall 86-85 in the 1977 NIT before the season ended with an 81-71 loss to Villanova in the quarterfinal round, and his play that year brought him second-team All-ECBL honours.
Across his varsity career from 1974-75 through 1976-77, Town played 83 games with 62 starts and finished with 1,211 points, 879 rebounds, and 152 assists, averaging 13.6 points and 10.6 rebounds per game while shooting 521-for-1008 from the field for 51.7 percent and 169-for-234 at the line for 72.2 percent.
He finished tied for 27th on the UMass all-time scoring list with 1,211 points and ranked seventh in career rebounds with 879, while his 10.6 career rebounding average ranked among the best in school history and his 1975-76 and 1976-77 rebound totals of 334 and 351 both placed among the top single-season marks in the program.
Town later remained part of the program’s historical recognition through selection to UMass’s all-time team of the 1970s, reflecting the impact he made in only three varsity seasons.
