COLLEGE

Carson chose to play for coach Herb Sendek at Arizona State, however, he was declared academically ineligible for the 2011/12 season and did not appear in any games that year.

Carson played college basketball at Arizona State during the 2012/13 season, which the program finished 22–13 overall and 9–9 in Pac-12 play under head coach Herb Sendek, reaching the Pac-12 Tournament quarterfinals before advancing to the 2013 NIT (Second Round).

As a redshirt freshman in 2012/13, Carson averaged 18.5 points and 5.0 assists per game while playing 35 games and becoming the first Sun Devil freshman to both start and play in all 35 games, logging 37.2 minutes per game and 1,303 total minutes. He produced 647 points, made 231 field goals on 488 attempts, and added 177 assists, while shooting .473 from the field and .734 at the free throw line, and he set Arizona State freshman records in points, field goals made, field goals attempted, assists, total minutes, and 20-point games (18). His 18.5 points per game ranked seventh in Pac-10/12 history for a freshman and his 177 assists ranked sixth, and he also had three 30-point games, including a career-high 34 points against Stanford in the Pac-12 Tournament on March 13, 2013, when he scored five points in overtime in an 89–88 win. He was named the Pac-12 co-Freshman of the Year with UCLA’s Shabazz Muhammad and a first team All-Pac-12 selection, while also earning a spot on the Pac-12 All-Freshman Team.

In Arizona State’s 2013 NIT first-round win over Detroit on March 20, 2013, Carson posted 22 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists in the 83–68 victory, narrowly missing a triple-double, before the Sun Devils’ NIT run ended in the second round with a loss to Baylor.

Carson returned for his sophomore season in 2013/14 and was again named first team All-Pac-12 after averaging 18.6 points, 4.6 assists, and 4.0 rebounds per game while playing 33 games and 35.4 minutes per game. He totaled 614 points, 153 assists, 23 steals, and shot .433 from the field, .391 from three-point range, and .719 at the free throw line, as Arizona State went 21–12 overall and 10–8 in Pac-12 play, earning an NCAA Tournament berth and exiting in the Round of 64 with an 87–85 loss to Texas.

On April 16, 2014, Carson declared for the NBA draft, leaving Arizona State after two playing seasons and forgoing his remaining college eligibility.
