Australian women’s basketball has been a force in world standards for many years and the trend is not slowing, rather gathering more momentum and driving interest in our pathways for junior girls.
Who can forget our 2016 Sapphires who defeated Italy 62-38 in the FIBA U17 women’s world championship final to become the first team outside of the United States to win the tournament? More recently the Emerging Opals playing in the 2017 World University Games claimed the gold medal with an 85-76 victory over Japan.
Arguably our most successful player-coach, Sandy Brondello, has been appointed head coach of the Opals as Australia Basketball look to make a push for the coveted Olympic Gold medal in Tokyo in 2020.
Recent success in girls basketball has led to a significant increase in young hopefuls and on September 23rd and 24th, fifteen Division I college coaches will attend camps in both Sunshine Coast (QLD) and Melbourne (VIC) to unearth, hopefully… the next Lauren Jackson.
Mark Williams, International Scout from Premier Basketball in the USA, is the man responsible for putting together the College Basketball Exposure camps which will be attended by coaching staff from 15 major US Colleges.
Schools which have confirmed the will be sending coaching staff include the University of Washington, Saint Mary’s University, Seattle University, UMASS, University of Portland and Utah State University.
All coaches are from Division I schools and all are here for one purpose, to sign Australian talent for their teams.
This event is a huge opportunity for our girls to showcase their talents without the expense of a trip to America. Hopefully, this will become an annual event and one that drives more girls into the sport of basketball.
