The Geelong Supercats will heat up the court this Saturday night, as they urge fans to bring along a blanket to the blockbuster game against the Bendigo Braves at the Geelong Arena.
Partnering with the Leaders of Geelong, the Supercats will host a blanket drive on the 11th August in an intiative known as “Rugged Up.”
The project was conceived to provide blankets to Geelong families and individuals who are facing homelessness on a daily basis. It is estimated that there are about 2000 people homeless in the Geelong region, with a number of those sleeping rough or couch surfing as a way of seeking shelter. The event is based on a project that the Collingwood football club ran called “Bring a Blanket Day”, where they collected over 17,000 blankets at the first blanket event in 2009.
K-Rock’s B Team did an outside broadcast at the Arena recently where they managed to cover the entire basketball court in blankets that had been donated. The Rugged Up initiative has placed white wheelie bins around the Arena, where people can come and drop off their clean blankets which will then be distributed to people in need through the Salvation Army and other Geelong base homeless organisations.
Blanket donations can be made all throughout this week to the Geelong Arena, and the Supercats are encouraging everyone attending the game on Saturday night to bring a blanket with them and drop it in the white Rugged Up bins!
Tip off for the women’s game on Saturday night is at 5.30pm and the men at 7.30pm.
