Adel, 23, was one of the most coveted Australian free agents on the market and was quickly made a priority by the Hawks’ new ownership group entering NBL Free Agency.

He was pursued heavily by both of his hometown Melbourne teams and the Adelaide 36ers but the talks went silent with those teams once the Hawks announced Brian Goorjian as coach. Goorjian has close in close contact with Adel with both residing in Melbourne with flights out being blocked due to COVID-19.

Some finer details are to be re-worked in Adel’s contract but he is still expected to be announced as the first big-name acquired by the Hawks new ownership in the coming days.

Adel played three years, averaging a team-high 15 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists in his final season before entering the 2018 NBA draft only to go undrafted. A quick stint in the NBA G-League Raptors 905 led to his shot with the Cavaliers where played in 19 NBA games, starting in three of them.

He was in the last group of players cut from the Australia Boomers 2019 FIBA World Cup squad and spent last season playing with the Long Island Nets in the G-League before their season was paused – and ultimately cancelled – due to the coronavirus pandemic in March, Adel held averages of 11 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists per game up until that point.
