Matthews joined Juvecaserta for the 2006 LegaDue season, playing his first season in Italy and appearing in nine games as the club reached the playoff semifinals.
After returning overseas in 2008–2009, Matthews played in Romania with CSU Atlassib Sibiu, a team that finished 17–9 in the Divizia A regular season before losing a five-game semifinal series to Ploiesti, and his teammates on that roster included Cortney Scott, Brandon Johnson, Michael Harrison, Brice Kabengele-Kalala and Earl Brown under head coach Peter Schomers.
Matthews then spent 2009 in South Korea with the Seoul Samsung Thunders before moving the same year to Cyprus for the 2009–2010 season with Apollon Limassol, which also competed under the Pizza Express Primetel Apollon name during that period.
In 2010, Matthews played in Mexico for Guinda de Nogales, then shifted to Austria for the 2010–2011 A Bundesliga season with Panthers Fürstenfeld, where Eurobasket’s Austria stat line lists him at 28 games and 10.7 points per game, and the team’s roster included Lorenzo O’Neal among the imports alongside Austrian guards Clemens Krammer and Michael Trummer.
Matthews returned to Austria in 2012 with BC Vienna and also appeared in Mexico during 2012 with Lechugueros de León before another BC Vienna stint in 2014–2015, when he played 26 Austrian BSL games and averaged 8.8 points, 3.4 rebounds, 0.7 assists and 1.0 steals in 16.1 minutes per game.
During the 2014–2015 BC Vienna season, Matthews’ listed teammates included Sheriff Drammeh, Zac Owens, Aron Stazic, Ivan Gavrilovic, Lenny Benczak, Marko Goranovic, Ivan Siriscevic, Julio De Assis and Saiquan Jamison.
COLLEGE
Matthews played college basketball at Virginia Tech during the 2000–01 season and competed with the Hokies from 2000 to 2004, concluding his eligibility prior to 2004.
As a freshman in 2000–01 under head coach Ricky Stokes, he appeared in 28 games and averaged 6.5 points and 3.2 rebounds per game while shooting above 50 percent from the field, contributing primarily in a frontcourt rotation role.
In 2001–02, he increased his production to 11.2 points and 5.4 rebounds per game across 29 appearances, starting the majority of contests and ranking among the team leaders in field-goal percentage while logging over 25 minutes per game.
During the 2002–03 season, Matthews averaged 15.3 points and 6.7 rebounds per game in 28 games, leading the Hokies in scoring and rebounding while recording multiple double-digit rebounding performances and ranking near the top of the Big East Conference in field-goal efficiency following Virginia Tech’s transition into the league.
As a senior in 2003–04, he averaged 17.0 points and 7.6 rebounds per game across 28 games, finishing his collegiate career as one of the team’s top scorers and rebounders while maintaining a field-goal percentage above 50 percent and adding over one block per game.
Across his four seasons at Virginia Tech, Matthews accumulated over 1,300 career points and more than 700 career rebounds, starting more than 80 games and establishing himself as a consistent interior scorer and rebounder in conference play.
