COLLEGE
Runchey played college basketball at the University of Northern Iowa, As a freshman in 1972-73 he was part of the program before his varsity scoring years began and he went on to graduate in the Class of 1977.
He moved into the varsity group in 1973-74 as a forward during Jim Berry’s first season as head coach at Northern Iowa.
Northern Iowa finished 4-22 in 1973-74, and that season included a 94-60 road game at Kansas on 8 December 1973 before closing the year with a loss to Morningside on 5 March 1974.
Runchey remained a regular part of the team through the difficult 1973-74 campaign and was still in the rotation for games against Mankato State, South Dakota State, Augustana and Morningside.
In 1974-75 he became one of Northern Iowa’s established starters and was one of the main returning pieces on the roster.
That 1974-75 team won 82-65 over South Dakota on 1 February 1975, and Runchey was one of the key upperclass players on a team that also featured Jim Davis and Nic Classick.
By the end of his college career, Runchey had produced 830 career points and 534 career rebounds for Northern Iowa.
Those totals placed him in Northern Iowa’s 500 points and 500 rebounds club, a group reserved for players who reached both milestones in their Panther careers.
His scoring total kept him on Northern Iowa’s all-time scoring list for decades, and his 830 points remained enough to keep him inside the program’s top 70 career scorers.
Runchey returned for his senior season in 1975-76 as one of the experienced leaders on the team and served as team captain.
Northern Iowa entered that season with three returning lettermen from the previous squad, and Runchey was one of the leading veterans around whom the team was built.
He finished his college years with a five-game home winning streak to close the 1975-76 home schedule, including a 95-94 win over Western Illinois on 5 March 1976.
Across his Northern Iowa career, Runchey’s most durable statistical markers were his 830 points, 534 rebounds, his place in the 500-500 club, and his standing as one of the Panthers’ notable forwards of the mid-1970s.
COACHING HISTORY
After retiring in 1984 Runchey spent a number of years away from the game before moving into the role of assistant coach of the Westside Saints in 1990. There he supported former teammate, now the Saints head coach, Dean Templeton.
