New Sydney Kings recruit and European veteran Aleks Maric has been called into the Boomers squad leading up to the Rio Olympics as an injury replacement for Andrew Bogut.
Aleks confirmed the news in an interview with Fox Sports.
“Obviously any time you get the call up for Australia, and an event like this, it is very special.”
When asked about Australia’s medal chances, Aleks noted that the Boomers are always the underdogs.
“We scare other teams. And we know we’re going to give 110% and show that Aussie spirit.”
Aleks is the newest member of the Sydney Kings, a team which boasts a Boomers legend as coach in Andrew Gaze and current Australian squad members Kevin Lisch and Brad Newley.
Aleks Maric at his Boomers teammates at the London Olympics.“With former and current Boomers teammate Brad Newley on the team, it is definitely something to look forward to.”
Aleks is no stranger to international competition, having represented Australia at the 2012 Olympics and 2010 World Cup.
However his Rio chances will be subject to the recovery of Andrew Bogut, who is still hopeful of representing Australia this year.
The Boomers’ selection camp will be in Melbourne from the 5th of July.
