NBL EXPERIENCE

Adam Simmons made his NBL debut with the Townsville Suns on 11/9/1993. He scored three points in his first game.

Townsville joined the National Basketball League in 1993 as its newest expansion side, launching their inaugural campaign under the name “Townsville Suns.” Local coaching product Mark Bragg took the reins, with seasoned guard Graham Kubank appointed team captain. The roster was built around a core of local talent—David Blades, Lucas Agrums, Jason Cameron, Tonny Jensen, and Kubank—many of whom had risen through Townsville’s state league ranks. They were bolstered by the recruitment of imports Ricky Jones and Rimas Kurtinaitis.

In a historic move, the Suns signed 33-year-old Lithuanian Olympian Rimas Kurtinaitis, making him the first European-born import to play in the NBL. The team’s debut came on April 17 against Newcastle and, while the Suns fell short 110–106, Ricky Jones turned heads with a remarkable 47-point performance. Rookie Tonny Jensen also made an immediate impact with 14 points and five assists in just 14 minutes off the bench. After four straight losses to open the season, Townsville earned their breakthrough win on May 14, defeating Newcastle 98–89 in front of a capacity home crowd, with Jones and Kurtinaitis again combining for over 50 points to spark scenes of celebration at The Furnace.

Rookie forward Adam Simmons (1.7 points, 1.7 rebounds, and 0.7 assists across 3 games) appeared briefly during the Suns’ inaugural campaign. Though limited to three appearances, Simmons added size to the rotation and gained valuable experience in the team’s foundation year.

Jones (28.0 points, 9.3 rebounds, and 2.2 blocks) dominated statistically, earning club MVP honours and leading the league in blocks. Kurtinaitis (24.7 points and 5.1 rebounds) starred before departing in August to join Real Madrid. Townsville managed four wins for the year, including a 105–103 upset over Adelaide and a thrilling 125–124 win in Geelong to close their victory tally.

The Suns finished with a 4–22 record but sold out every home game and built strong local support, giving young contributors like Simmons the chance to be part of a historic debut season.

Adam Simmons played one season in the NBL. He averaged 1.6 points, 1.6 rebounds, and 0.6 assists in 3 NBL games.

    • Which NBL Teams Spent the Most?

Over the past three NBL seasons, clubs have spent almost $97 million assembling their rosters, but how much of that money has translated into wins, and which teams have delivered the best value for money? These figures represent cash spend, not salary cap spend. Cash spending includes player salaries and additional costs such as agent fees, bonuses, import related expenses and luxury tax, rather than simply the amounts counted against the league's salary cap. How much have NBL teams spent over the past three seasons?…
