COLLEGE
Smith suited up for Texas Christian University (TCU) across four NCAA seasons from 1988-89 through 1991-92, finishing his Horned Frogs career with 121 games played and career totals of 1,630 points, 966 rebounds, 158 assists, 103 steals, and 133 blocks while shooting 620-for-1,250 from the field (49.6%) and 390-for-679 on free throws (57.4%).
As a freshman in 1988-89, Smith appeared in 30 games for Moe Iba’s TCU team, which finished 17-13 overall and 9-7 in Southwest Conference play, and he averaged 7.6 points and 4.2 rebounds in 20.4 minutes per game while shooting 88-for-187 (47.1%) and making 52-of-98 free throws (53.1%) with 14 assists, 18 steals, and 20 blocks on the season.
In his sophomore year (1989-90), Smith played 29 games as TCU went 16-13 overall and 9-7 in SWC action, and he lifted his production to 10.5 points and 6.2 rebounds per game in 26.3 minutes, totaling 304 points and 179 rebounds while adding 23 assists, 30 steals, and 40 blocks and shooting 115-for-260 from the field (44.2%) and 74-for-117 at the line (63.2%).
Smith’s junior season in 1990-91 saw him move into a heavier workload as TCU finished 18-10 overall and 9-7 in conference play, and he averaged 17.5 points and 9.8 rebounds per game in 35.9 minutes while totaling 490 points and 274 rebounds, along with 51 assists, 24 steals, and 43 blocks, while converting 192-for-377 from the field (50.9%) and 106-for-207 at the stripe (51.2%), and he earned first-team All-Southwest Conference honours during the season.
As a senior in 1991-92, Smith helped TCU post a 23-11 overall record and a 9-5 SWC mark, and he averaged 17.9 points, 11.4 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game in 33.4 minutes, producing 608 points and 386 rebounds (the third-highest single-season rebound total in TCU history) while adding 70 assists, 31 steals, and 30 blocks, and he shot 225-for-426 from the field (52.8%) and 158-for-257 on free throws (61.5%) as he again received first-team All-SWC recognition.
During that 1991-92 postseason run, TCU went 1-1 in the SWC Postseason Classic and 1-1 in the National Invitation Tournament, and Smith ended his college tenure as the program’s all-time leader in career rebounds (966) while also holding TCU records tied to rebounds, blocked shots, consecutive starts, and career starts, with his career points total (1,630) placing him among the school’s top scorers and his four-year arc featuring steady increases in minutes (from 20.4 as a freshman to 33.4 as a senior) and scoring (from 7.6 points per game to 17.9).
