NBL EXPERIENCE

Tony Robinson made his NBL debut with the Illawarra Hawks on 3/3/1979. He went scoreless in his first NBL game.

Launching into the NBL’s debut year, Illawarra built around a Wollongong core under coach Joe Farrugia and captain Bob Kubbinga, with imports Jim Slacke and Ted Holcomb driving the offence while Gordie McLeod led the offence and Tony Robinson rounded out the bench.

Illawarra opened with a landmark 91–88 upset of St Kilda on March 3 as Jim Slacke (22 points) led a balanced line alongside Ted Holcomb (18 points), Steve Tonkin (16 points), Jim Williams (15 points), and Gordie McLeod (14 points), while the Saints rode Larry Sengstock (25 points) and Tony Barnett (25 points) as both teams shot 50% and the Hawks went 17-of-21 at the stripe to 16-of-29.

A 74–78 home loss to Canberra followed the next day before Illawarra edged Bankstown 74–71 to reach 2–1, setting the platform before the schedule toughened.

Momentum flipped with a nine-game slide capped by the 47–77 defeat at Nunawading on April 7 in which Bruce Andrews (17 points) and Jim Slacke (16 points) were the only Hawks in double figures as Illawarra attempted just 36 field goals and went 11-of-15 at the line while the Spectres finished 37-of-74.

Form returned on May 12 with the biggest win of the year, a 110–83 home result over Glenelg powered by Ted Holcomb (32 points) and Jim Slacke (26 points) with support from Steve Tonkin (18 points) and Jim Williams (11 points), while David Smyth (21 points) and Lutz Heim (18 points) paced the Tigers and Robinson provided depth on the perimeter.

The Hawks completed the Glenelg sweep 74–68 in Adelaide, then closed on June 2 with a one-point derby at the Snakepit, edging Newcastle 81–80 behind Jim Slacke (34 points), Ted Holcomb (14 points), and Jim Williams (10 points) against Falcons leaders Dave Ankeney (26 points) and Dan Riley (24 points).

Across the rotation, Jim Slacke (23.8 points across 18 games) finished fifth in league scoring and topped the NBL in free-throw percentage (80.8%), Ted Holcomb (16.1 points across 10 games) supplied interior punch, Steve Tonkin (13.4 points across 15 games) added steady wing scoring, Gordie McLeod (10.1 points across 17 games) steered the offence, Bob Kubbinga (8.1 points across 18 games) anchored the group, and Jim Williams (7.3 points across 18 games) chipped in, with Tony Robinson featuring in seven appearances as a defensive and energy guard, but failing to score.

Illawarra finished 5–13 for 8th place in a ten-team league, missing the four-team postseason, and the inaugural title was decided by a single-game Grand Final as St Kilda edged Canberra 94–93 on June 10, a finish that underscored the significance of the Hawks’ opening-night win over the eventual champions.

Tony Robinson played one season in the NBL.

    • Which NBL Teams Spent the Most?

Over the past three NBL seasons, clubs have spent almost $97 million assembling their rosters, but how much of that money has translated into wins, and which teams have delivered the best value for money? These figures represent cash spend, not salary cap spend. Cash spending includes player salaries and additional costs such as agent fees, bonuses, import related expenses and luxury tax, rather than simply the amounts counted against the league's salary cap. How much have NBL teams spent over the past three seasons?…

Now Justin Tatum is in his fourth season with Illawarra, and the Hawks have gone from NBL champions to the bottom of the ladder. Could they be experiencing the same problem? Justin Tatum transformed Illawarra from one of the NBL's worst teams into champions. But ahead of today's clash…
