NBL EXPERIENCE

Chris Novak made his NBL debut with the Townsville Crocodiles on 12/10/1999. He scored eight points in his first game.

Townsville’s second season under Ian Stacker opened with sweeping changes that left Brad Davidson and David Pennisi as the only links to the old Suns. Veterans Simon Kerle and Jason Cameron moved to Brisbane, Michael Pennisi headed to the Philippines, and import James Harper departed. The core of Robert Rose, Sam Mackinnon and Andrew Goodwin returned, with Stacker adding Mike Kelly (via Victoria), Pat Reidy (via Newcastle) and Ben Knight (via Sydney), while rookies Peter Crawford and Chris Novak were introduced for depth.

The campaign began with a 95–106 road loss to the Victoria Titans despite Rose’s hot start (29 points, 14 rebounds, 4 assists; 14-of-15 FT) and Goodwin’s support (19 points, 6 rebounds), as Jason Smith (29 points) and Darryl McDonald (19 points, 8 assists) led the hosts.

Townsville quickly reset at home, beating Wollongong 99–88 behind Rose in near triple-double mode (17 points, 13 assists, 8 rebounds, 3 steals), with Reidy (21 points) and Kelly (19 points) adding punch. Momentum rolled through Perth (123–81), Sydney (98–88) and Cairns (103–75) before a 131–127 shootout over Adelaide, where Goodwin erupted (40 points, 15 rebounds) to outlast Brett Maher (40 points) and Martin Cattalini (27 points).

A 4–6 wobble ended with a crisp 108–90 over Wollongong as Mackinnon authored a triple-double (22 points, 11 rebounds, 13 assists), Davidson fired off the bench (19 points) and Rose filled every column (14 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals). Novak contributed in short bursts throughout the year as a reserve big (season averages above).

Through the holidays the Crocs hardened into contenders—Cairns (116–82), Wollongong (108–90) and Canberra twice (117–88, 128–101)—then thumped Brisbane 103–78 as Rose logged a triple-double (14 points, 10 rebounds, 11 assists). January to March brought signature wins over Melbourne (102–97), West Sydney (102–95), Canberra (121–98), a 122–73 rout of Brisbane, and late road results at the Giants (81–74) and Hawks (114–98). Townsville finished a club-record 22–6 (11–3 home, 11–3 away) for second place and a first-round bye. Goodwin led the scoring (18.0 points, 6.6 rebounds) and claimed NBL Most Improved Player and All-NBL Second Team, Mackinnon (17.3 points, 8.6 rebounds, 4.9 assists, 2.0 steals, 1.1 blocks) made the All-NBL First Team and was co-winner of the club MVP with Rose (17.2 points, 7.2 rebounds, 6.6 assists, 1.8 steals). Stacker was also named Coach of the Year.

In the semi-finals against Perth, Townsville fell 101–104 in Game 1 despite Kelly (29 points) and a Mackinnon triple-double (16 points, 13 rebounds, 10 assists), levelled 101–78 in Game 2 behind Rose (21 points, 11 rebounds, 9 assists) with Mackinnon (23 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists, 4 steals) and Reidy (22 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists) prominent, then lost the decider 84–104 despite Rose’s season-best line (33 points, 8 assists, 4 steals). Novak did not appear in any playoff games.

2000/01
Townsville’s year unfolded against a backdrop of a flying start and mid-season recalibration, opening with a 120–85 smashing of Cairns at The Swamp and surging to 4–1 before road losses at Adelaide (105–121) and Perth (108–121), plus a two-game stumble against Victoria, dropped the record to 5–4.

Around this time Sam MacKinnon (17.4 points, 9.8 rebounds, 5.1 assists, 1.5 steals, 1.1 blocks) was shut down after 16 games, with severe bone bruising ending his season.

Ian Stacker re-jigged the roster, replacing the underperforming Dujuan Wiley (7.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, 1.9 blocks) with David Hinton (9.8 points, 6.0 rebounds) in February.

Hinton’s arrival set off an eleven-game win streak for the Crocodiles, highlighted by the 126–63 dismantling of Brisbane in Round 22, one of the biggest winning margins in NBL history and a club-record victory.

Townsville closed the regular season 22–6—then a club best and equal-best in the league—officially second on percentage to the Victoria Titans.

Seeing limited minutes across 13 games, Novak (2.1 points, 1.8 rebounds, 0.5 steals) filled gaps where needed, while Robert Rose (22.0 points, 8.3 rebounds, 6.2 assists, 1.2 steals, 0.6 blocks) claimed league MVP and All-NBL First Team honours, with major support from Pat Reidy (17.5 points, 6.8 rebounds, 3.3 assists), Mike Kelly (16.6 points, 5.9 rebounds, 4.6 assists, 1.3 steals) and Andrew Goodwin (16.5 points, 7.5 rebounds).

In the Qualifying Finals Townsville outlasted Sydney 2–1, then defeated Victoria 2–1 in the Semi-Finals to secure the club’s first Grand Final berth, where the Crocs split the first two games with Wollongong (101–104, 114–97) before the Hawks claimed the decider 97–94 to lift the first NBL title by a NSW team.

    • Why Newcastle’s NBL Return Is Closer Than You Think

However, one city that continues to quietly build momentum as a realistic candidate for a future franchise is Newcastle. While it may not always dominate the expansion headlines, the pieces required for an NBL return are slowly aligning, and according to former owner of the Illawarra Hawks, Dorry Kordahi, the push for a Newcastle team is very real.…
