BIO: Wade Helliwell was born in Melbourne (VIC) and began playing basketball as a junior with the Dandenong basketball program. Helliwell received a scholarship to attend the Australian Institute of Sport (Canberra) in 1999. He spent one year there and played for the program’s state league team.
NBL EXPERIENCE
Wade Helliwell made his NBL debut with the Brisbane Bullets at 22 years of age. He scored four points in his first game.
Was signed with Melbourne for 2010-2013 but was released to sign with Adelaide 2011/11.
2010/11
The 2010/11 campaign became one of the most difficult seasons in recent Melbourne Tigers history, marking the team’s lowest finish since 1987. Notably, this was the first Tigers roster since that era to lack club legends Andrew Gaze and Chris Anstey, clearly signalling a complete rebuild of the franchise.
Significant roster changes reshaped Melbourne’s line-up following the departures of marquee players Julius Hodge, Mark Worthington (to Gold Coast), Luke Kendall (also to Gold Coast), Daniel Johnson (to Adelaide), and the retirements of veterans Anstey and Sam MacKinnon. Head coach Al Westover aimed to revitalise the team by recruiting import guards Eric Devendorf and TJ Campbell, complemented by a frontcourt loaded with size, including Cameron Tragardh (from Wollongong), Matt Burston (from Perth), and the international returns of Luke Nevill and Wade Helliwell. However, the imbalanced roster quickly exposed itself, leading to inconsistent and ineffective performances.
Melbourne opened the year with a disappointing 84–68 home loss to Sydney and dropped their next three matches, spiralling into an early-season crisis. This slow start prompted swift roster adjustments, with the club releasing import guard TJ Campbell (11.8 points, 3 rebounds, and 2.8 assists) and replacing him with reigning NBL MVP Corey Williams (17.3 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 6.1 assists), who became available after departing a Greek club due to contractual disputes. Williams joined Eric Devendorf (14.6 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 1.8 assists), forming an offensively dynamic but defensively vulnerable backcourt.
Williams immediately energised the Tigers’ offence and provided much-needed leadership, but the team’s broader struggles persisted. Internal tensions soon erupted publicly when team owner Seamus McPeake confronted players mid-season, threatening to withhold salaries unless performances improved. The fallout led to further instability: Devendorf was released to cut costs, and Al Westover was dismissed as head coach, replaced by his assistant Darryl McDonald for the remainder of the season.
Despite the turmoil, Williams continued to orchestrate the offence effectively alongside steady veteran Daryl Corletto (10.1 points and 1.7 rebounds). Midway through the year, starting centre Luke Nevill (12.2 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks) requested a release to join BC Triumph Lyubertsy in Russia. In his absence, Tragardh (11.9 points and 4.5 rebounds) and Burston (8.9 points and 6.7 rebounds) were called upon heavily to fill the gap inside, delivering consistent contributions.
Wade Helliwell (4 points and 2.6 rebounds) also featured prominently, appearing in all 28 games and bringing veteran experience and defensive presence off the bench. Although his statistics were modest, Helliwell’s size and physicality provided valuable depth in the Tigers’ otherwise turbulent frontcourt rotation.
Melbourne picked up late-season victories against lower-ranked opponents such as Sydney, Adelaide, and the Gold Coast Blaze, yet the team was unable to generate meaningful momentum. Ultimately, the Tigers closed the 2010/11 season seventh on the ladder with a 10–18 record, establishing a new franchise record for most losses in a single campaign and clearly highlighting the ongoing challenges of their rebuilding phase.
Wade Helliwell played six seasons across three NBL teams. This included the Brisbane Bullets, Melbourne Tigers and Adelaide 36ers. He averaged 8.5 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 0.6 assists in 159 NBL games.

STATE LEAGUE EXPERIENCE
- AIS (1999)
Helliwell joined AIS for the 1999 SEABL season, playing the supplied state league stint with the Canberra-based AIS men’s team after coming through Dandenong juniors.
Helliwell was part of the 1999 AIS men’s group that included Stephen Black, Andrew Latimer, Andrew Looke, Neil Mottram, Adam Quick, Andrew Rice, Luke Schenscher, Luke Spencer-Gardner, Ben Tatulli, Daniel Thompson and Marcus Wright.
FIBA EXPERIENCE
In 2006, Helliwell made his debut for the national team at the 2006 FIBA World Championship in Japan. There, the Boomers started the tournament with a opening victory over Brazil (83-79) but then lost their next three games in a row. Bogut (12.8 points and 6.2 rebounds) led the team in points and rebounds and helped the team deliver a convincing win over Qatar (93–46) which qualified the team for the second round. Their poor record (2-3) saw them draw USA who soundly defeated Australia (113-73) and ended their campaign tied for ninth place.

INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE
- Greece - Panionios (2002–2004), PAOK (2009–2010) | Italy - Lottomatica Roma (2004–2006), Montepaschi Siena (2006–2007), Solsonica Rieti (2006–2008), Fabi Shoes (2008–2009)
Helliwell exited the NBL to play with Panionios in Greece’s HEBA A1 in 2002–03, where he played nine games and averaged 15.7 minutes, 3.3 points and 4.2 rebounds per game while shooting 47.8% from the field and 57.1% at the foul line, on a roster that included Toby Bailey and Vangelis Sklavos.
Helliwell also appeared for Panionios in 2003–04, logging three HEBA A1 games at 13.3 minutes per outing, and he was part of a group that included imports Ruben Douglas and Travis Watson.
In 2004–05, he moved to Italy with Lottomatica Roma in Serie A TIM, featuring in 18 games and averaging 14.8 minutes, 4.2 points and 3.6 rebounds per game while shooting 52.8% from the field, alongside teammates such as Tyus Edney, Tomas Van Den Spiegel, Marko Tusek, Maurice Carter and Lubos Barton.
Helliwell remained with Roma in 2005–06 and also saw EuroCup action, playing 10 games in the competition and averaging 11.5 minutes and 3.0 points per game, with Basketball-Reference listing him at 68.8% shooting on 1.1 makes from 1.6 attempts per game in that sample, while an Italian-language career summary credits him with 54 total appearances for Virtus Roma across 2004–06.
He then had a brief stint with Montepaschi Siena in 2006–07, appearing in three games at 3.7 minutes per game, and he was on a roster that included Rimantas Kaukėnas, Terrell McIntyre, Benjamin Eze and Joseph Forte.
From there, he joined Solsonica Rieti, with Basketball-Reference listing him for 33 games in 2007–08 at 18.4 minutes per game while shooting 46.7% from the field, and Italian sources attributing 53 total appearances to his Rieti stint across 2006–08.
In 2008–09, Helliwell played in Italy for Fabi Shoes, with sources crediting him with 26 games at 12.2 minutes per game while shooting 47.8% from the field.
He returned to Greece in 2009–10 with PAOK, playing 23 games at 8.4 minutes per game and shooting 44.8% from the field, and PAOK’s 2009–10 squad list for that season included players such as Chris Monroe, Kenny Gregory, Lazaros Papadopoulos, Predrag Drobnjak, Todor Gečevski and William Avery.
COLLEGE
Helliwell completed a stint at the Australian Institute of Sport before going on to a season of US College basketball attending the University of North Carolina at Charlotte for one season. He played 31 games for the 49ers averaging 2.5 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 0.4 blocks per game alongside Diego Guevara, Jobey Thomas, Kelvin Price, Galen Young, Tremaine Gardiner, Kedric Smith, Dalonte Hill, Jonathan Neely, Kenny Whitehead, Dee Tolliver, James Zimmerman, and KenKay Jones.
Charlotte finished the 1999–00 season 17–16 overall, including a 7–9 mark in Conference USA, with Bobby Lutz as head coach and Tremaine Gardiner named as a captain, and the season narrative was shaped early by the September death of forward Charles Hayward following a two-year battle with leukemia.
The 49ers’ year included neutral-site games and overtimes, with wins such as 66–56 over St. Bonaventure, 80–74 at Pepperdine, 98–93 in overtime at George Washington, and a 92–74 home win over Houston in Conference USA play, before they closed the regular season and moved into postseason action as an NIT team.
In the Conference USA Championships, Charlotte beat UAB 76–73 and Louisville 57–52 before falling 49–56 to DePaul, then in the NIT they were eliminated with a 45–62 loss at Mississippi, ending Helliwell’s lone Charlotte season on a team that finished 17–16 and reached the postseason.
