COLLEGE

Charles Gosa played four NCAA seasons at New Mexico State from 1995–96 through 1998–99, competing in the Big West Conference and developing into one of the program’s most productive frontcourt players of the late 1990s.

As a freshman in 1995–96, Gosa averaged 6.9 points, 5.9 rebounds and 0.9 assists per game, and he earned Big West All-Freshman recognition while also being named the Big West Freshman of the Year; that New Mexico State team finished 11–15 overall (8–10 in Big West play) under head coach Neil McCarthy.

In 1996–97, he continued as a regular rotation piece and averaged 6.6 points, 4.6 rebounds and 0.8 assists per game, with preseason coverage listing him among New Mexico State’s key returning players entering league play, and New Mexico State’s year-by-year record lists that season as a 19–9 campaign (12–4 in conference).

Gosa’s production jumped as a junior in 1997–98, when he averaged 12.5 points, 8.1 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game while New Mexico State finished 18–12 overall (8–8 in the Big West East) in Lou Henson’s first season as head coach; he was included as an honorable mention selection on the All-Big West team at season’s end, recorded a career-high 25 points in a January 1998 game against Cal State Fullerton, and was also listed as a Big West Player of the Week during that season (Feb. 2).

As a senior in 1998–99, Gosa averaged 14.9 points, 8.0 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game while helping New Mexico State finish 23–10 overall and 12–4 in Big West play to share the regular-season conference title, then win the Big West Tournament to secure an automatic NCAA Tournament berth; he was named First Team All-Big West and also made the Big West All-Tournament Team in 1999, and he made 199 field goals on 329 attempts (.605) that season while also being listed among the Big West Players of the Week during the 1998–99 season (Jan. 25).

His notable senior-year performances included 22 points and 10 rebounds against Wisconsin early in the season, a 10-point and season-high 12-rebound outing in a win over San Diego State, and a 26-point, 12-rebound game against Utah State on February 26, 1999 in Lou Henson’s 700th career coaching victory, with Gosa scoring the Aggies’ first 15 points of the second half in that contest.

In the 1999 NCAA Tournament, New Mexico State entered as a No. 14 seed and was eliminated in the first round by defending national champion Kentucky, 82–60, with Gosa scoring 18 points in the loss.

By the end of his New Mexico State career (1995–99), Gosa ranked among the school’s all-time leaders with 788 rebounds (sixth in program history), 126 steals (seventh), and 116 blocks (eighth).

    • Boomers: we’re not taking Patty and Bryce

At some point over the next 12 months, the Boomers are going to have to make a decision that Australian basketball has managed to avoid for almost two decades. Who exactly is this team built around now? Since 2010, that answer was simple. It was Patty Mills’ team. Mills has been the primary scorer for the Boomers for nearly two decades and few Australian victories have been recorded without a major scoring performance from Patty.
