NBL EXPERIENCE

Admiral Schofield made his NBL debut with the Cairns Taipans at 28 years of age. He scored 12 points in his first game.

After finishing last with an 8-21 record in NBL25, Cairns initially parted ways with Adam Forde before reappointing him as head coach. Rob Edwards (to Xinjiang), Taran Armstrong (to Golden State), Tanner Groves (to Nagasaki), Pedro Bradshaw (to Rostock), Akoldah Gak (to Mexico City), Jonah Antonio, Jackson Makoi, Deshon Taylor, Tad Dufelmeier Jr and Dillon Stith exited, while Sam Waardenburg, Kyrin Galloway, Kyle Adnam, Kody Stattmann and Alex Higgins-Titsha returned. Forde added Jack McVeigh (via Houston), Admiral Schofield (via Lyon), Marcus Lee (via Melbourne), Reyne Smith (via Louisville), Mawot Mag (via BYU), Lloyd McVeigh (via South Adelaide) and Jed Richardson (via Northside), while Lachlan Barker (via Tasmania) joined as a nominated replacement player. Ashton Hagans (via Xinjiang) was initially signed before a mutual release, with Andrew Andrews (via Vilnius) replacing him before the season.

Schofield signed a one-year import deal after most recently playing for LDLC ASVEL in France. The 2019 second-round NBA draft pick arrived with 131 games of NBA experience across Washington and Orlando, with Cairns expecting his size, strength and versatility to improve the team at both ends.

Cairns opened the season at John Cain Arena on September 20, where Schofield (12 points and 6 rebounds) started, but South East Melbourne defeated the Taipans 114-77. Smith (19 points and 6 rebounds) and Jack McVeigh (18 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists) led Cairns, while Glover (18 points and 5 rebounds) was the Phoenix’s leading scorer.

Schofield (8.8 points and 4.3 rebounds across 30 games) started 15 times and began the season as one of Cairns’ main scoring options before shifting to the bench during the second half of the campaign. He scored in double figures in 11 of his first 16 appearances but only twice across his final 14 games as his role and production declined.

Schofield (19 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, and 1 steal) delivered the first of his three season-high 19-point games in Cairns’ home opener on September 26 as the Taipans held off Brisbane 83-82. Jack McVeigh (19 points, 9 rebounds, and 9 assists) narrowly missed a triple-double and Lee (12 points, 3 rebounds, and 1 block) provided support, while Harrison (22 points and 7 rebounds) led the Bullets as Cairns collected its first win.

Schofield (18 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists, and 1 block) produced his best all-round performance against Adelaide at the Cairns Convention Centre on October 18, making five three-pointers, but the 36ers won 91-86. Andrews (23 points and 7 assists) and Smith (17 points) kept Cairns close, while Cotton (53 points and 5 assists) delivered the deciding performance for Adelaide.

Schofield (17 points, 11 rebounds, and 2 assists) recorded his only double-double in Wollongong on December 6 as an undermanned Cairns defeated defending champion Illawarra 93-76. Andrews (27 points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists, and 1 steal) and Galloway (16 points, 14 rebounds, 2 steals, and 1 block) led the win, while Grida (18 points) was the Hawks’ leading scorer as Cairns won without Jack McVeigh, Waardenburg and Smith and ended a run where it had lost 11 of its previous 12 games.

King (11.2 points and 4.4 rebounds across 22 games) returned to Cairns as an injury replacement after Higgins-Titsha (6.3 points and 4.6 rebounds across 9 games) suffered a season-ending wrist injury, while Dennis (0 points across 1 game) was later added as another injury replacement player.

Jack McVeigh (21.2 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 4 assists across 29 games) and Waardenburg (15.5 points and 5.4 rebounds across 8 games) were Cairns’ two leading scorers, although Waardenburg was restricted by ankle injuries. Andrews (14.8 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 7.6 assists across 31 games) carried much of the season-long offence and led the playmaking, with King providing another scoring option after joining during the season, while Smith (9.9 points across 14 games), Galloway (7.6 points and 4.6 rebounds across 33 games), Lee (6.8 points and 5.4 rebounds across 33 games) and Stattmann (6.6 points across 23 games) were the other main contributors.

Jack McVeigh earned All-NBL Second Team, club MVP and Members’ Choice MVP honours, Andrews received the Players’ Player award and Galloway was named Defensive Player of the Year. Barker (4.5 points across 26 games) received the Coaches’ Award and Richardson (0 points across 2 games) earned the Commitment to Community award.

Cairns finished ninth with a 9-24 record and missed the postseason. Their season ended at Eventfinda Stadium on February 19, where New Zealand won 115-84 behind Mennenga (32 points and 9 rebounds), with Andrews (24 points and 7 assists) and Stattmann (20 points and 5 rebounds) leading Cairns as Schofield (0 points, 5 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 steal) played 12:14.

Admiral Schofield played one season in the NBL. He averaged 8.8 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.4 assists in 30 NBL games.

As a freshman in 2015–16, Schofield played 32 games with 22 starts and averaged 7.6 points and 4.0 rebounds in 18.7 minutes, earning SEC Freshman of the Week on January 11, 2016 as he began carving out a role as a physical, two-way wing.

He took another step as a sophomore in 2016–17, appearing in 28 games and averaging 8.2 points and 4.4 rebounds while improving his volume at the free-throw line, then broke out as a junior in 2017–18 by starting 34 of 35 games and jumping to 13.9 points and 6.4 rebounds per game, which helped him earn All-SEC Second Team (coaches) and SEC Tournament All-Tournament Team recognition.

During Tennessee’s 2018 NCAA tournament run, Schofield delivered a 15-point, 12-rebound double-double against Wright State on March 15, 2018 and then led the Vols in scoring versus Loyola-Chicago in the second round with 14 points that included four threes, underlining his value as a big-shot perimeter scorer in March.

Schofield’s senior season in 2018–19 was his peak year, starting all 37 games and averaging 16.5 points and 6.1 rebounds while ranking among the SEC leaders in scoring and efficiency, shooting .474 from the field and .418 from three with 74 made threes, which earned him All-SEC First Team (coaches), All-SEC Second Team (AP), and Associated Press All-America Honorable Mention honours.

His signature performance came against top-ranked Gonzaga on December 9, 2018 when he scored a career-high 30 points and hit six three-pointers, a week that also brought a stack of national weekly awards including SEC Player of the Week and Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week recognition, and he followed it by scoring 29 at Memphis on December 15 as Tennessee surged into national contention.

Late in the year, Schofield powered key postseason wins with 21 points against Kentucky in the SEC Tournament semifinals on March 16, 2019 and then scored 19 points in both NCAA tournament wins over Colgate (March 22, sealing it with late threes) and Iowa (March 24) as Tennessee advanced to the Sweet 16.

In his final college game, Schofield logged a career-high 42 minutes and finished with 21 points and nine rebounds in Tennessee’s 99–94 overtime loss to Purdue in the 2019 Sweet 16, closing a career that also left him ranked seventh in program history in made three-pointers (184) and 16th in scoring (1,570).
