BIO: Wayne Keon Turner was born in Boston, Massachusetts (USA) and played high school basketball at Beaver Country Day School in Brookline, Massachusetts.

Was named McDonald’s High School All-American in 1995 and then enrolled at Kentucky University. Following his college years he played for his hometown NBA team the Boston Celtics and the International Basketball League Cincinnati Stuff.

NBL EXPERIENCE

Wayne Turner made his NBL debut with the Townsville Crocodiles at 26 years of age. He scored four points in his first game.

In 2000, he signed with the Harlem Globetrotters. In 2002, he played for the Dakota Wizards of the Continental Basketball Association and helped the team win the 2002 CBA Championship.

Turner rejoined the Wizards in 2005, helping them reach the playoffs. In 2008, he returned to the CBA as a member of the East Kentucky Miners.

COLLEGE

Wayne Turner played college basketball at Kentucky from the 1995–96 season through the 1998–99 season, serving as the Wildcats’ point guard across a four-year stretch in which the program won two national titles (1996 and 1998) and lost in the championship game once (1997).

As a freshman in 1995–96 under head coach Rick Pitino, Turner appeared in 35 games with 8 starts and averaged 4.5 points, 1.5 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and 1.1 steals in 13.1 minutes per game, shooting 53.3% from the field (65-for-122) and totaling 156 points, 52 rebounds, 56 assists, and 40 steals as Kentucky finished 34–2, went 16–0 in SEC regular-season play, and won the national championship game 76–67 over Syracuse.

In 1996–97, Turner played 40 games with 10 starts and increased his role to 22.7 minutes per game while averaging 6.6 points, 2.7 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 2.0 steals, finishing the season with 264 points, 107 rebounds, 120 assists, and 79 steals as Kentucky went 35–5 and reached the NCAA title game before an 84–79 overtime loss to Arizona.

Turner became a full-time starter as a junior in 1997–98, starting all 39 games and averaging 9.3 points, 3.1 rebounds, 4.4 assists, 1.6 steals, and 0.5 blocks in 28.2 minutes per game, while shooting 48.1% from the field and 36.8% on three-pointers; he totaled 362 points, 119 rebounds, 173 assists, 62 steals, and 18 blocks and was named SEC Tournament MVP and the 1998 NCAA Regional Most Outstanding Player during Kentucky’s 35–4 season that ended with a 78–69 win over Utah in the national championship game.

As a senior in 1998–99 under head coach Tubby Smith, Turner played 37 games with 36 starts and posted career highs of 10.5 points per game and 2.5 free throws made per game, adding 2.8 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 1.5 steals per contest while shooting 49.5% from the field; he finished the season with 388 points, 103 rebounds, 145 assists, and 57 steals as Kentucky went 28–9, won the SEC Tournament, and reached the Elite Eight before a 73–66 loss to Michigan State.

Across his four-year Kentucky career, Turner set the NCAA record for games played at the time (which has since been broken) with 151 games, and he produced 1,170 total points (7.7 per game), 381 rebounds (2.5 per game), 494 assists (3.3 per game), and a Kentucky-record 238 steals, while shooting 48.8% from the field and contributing to four deep NCAA Tournament runs that included two national championships and one runner-up finish; during his college career he appeared twice on the cover of Sports Illustrated magazine, including the April 6, 1998 issue featuring him on the cover following Kentucky’s 1998 national title run.
