The Sydney Kings have released their newest signing, Lamonte Turner after he failed his team physical when he arrived in Sydney. The Hoops Capital club confirmed the decision, adding that they will not make any further roster changes to close out their NBL25 season.

Despite being signed as a nominated replacement player following Jaylin Galloway’s season-ending shoulder injury, Turner spent almost a week with the squad yet failed to train with the full Kings squad, only working with younger players since his arrival.

The 27-year-old American guard was brought in to help solidify the backcourt and provide a spark to the team. Turner had a solid résumé, having starred at the University of Tennessee, where he won the 2018 SEC Sixth Man of the Year award, and gained professional experience in Serbia, Finland, and Poland. His arrival initially raised hopes he could contribute to the Kings’ playoff push, particularly by complementing star guard Jaylen Adams.

Turner’s ability to qualify for the postseason had hinged on tonight’s clash with Melbourne United at Qudos Bank Arena. Under NBL rules, Turner would have needed to play officially—or at least suit up and be listed as active—to meet eligibility requirements. However, with his contract now voided, the Kings will proceed without the recruit.

Head coach Brian Goorjian had expressed optimism about Turner’s arrival, highlighting his pass-first nature, defensive intensity, and leadership qualities. Goorjian called him “an elite defender” and a “strong locker room guy.” Despite those attributes, the failed physical ended Turner’s brief stint with the team before he could step onto the court.

The Kings, currently sitting at 12-9, remain focused on their playoff positioning as they face Melbourne United tonight at 7.15pm AEDT at Qudos Bank Arena.

The team’s ability to contend for a championship will now depend on their existing roster, with no further additions planned.
