Ryan Broekhoff Signs 2-Year NBA Deal With Dallas Mavericks

The Dallas Mavericks and Ryan Broekhoff have agreed to a two-year, $2.4 million deal with the first year of the deal fully guaranteed.

The 27-year-old has spent the past three years at Lokomotiv Kuban in the Russian VTB United League, and was highly sought after free agent in Europe weeks before agreeing to play with the Mavericks.

Only this week the Frankston born swing-man had a 2-year contract with Russian powerhouse Khimki Moscow on the table and was also talking to Anadolu Efes Istanbul who were offering a 3-year deal to play in Turkey.

Brokhoff played 16 Eurocup games with Lokomotiv Kuban, averaging 12.3 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. He also played for the team in the VTB United League where he averaged 8 points and 4 rebounds per game.

Broekhoff shot the three ball at 51% in Eurocup play this season and will give the Mavs extra depth on the perimeter as they aim to return to the NBA playoffs.

Dallas are focused on returning to the NBA playoffs, having recently drafted European superstar Luka Dončić (Slovenia) and acquiring free agent DeAndre Jordan to pair with up and coming rookie Dennis Smith Jr and future Hall of Famer Dirk Nowitzki.

Earlier in the year he proved his ability beyond the arc by winning the VTB United League three-point contest at their 2018 All-Star game.

The 2.01m guard played college ball at Valparaiso University before going undrafted in 2013 NBA draft. He signed a one-year deal Turkish club Beşiktaş shortly after where he two seasons before signing with Lokomotiv Kuban.

Broekhoff’s first tournament for the Australian Boomers squad was the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup where after playing in only a few short warm-up games he earned himself a place in the team’s starting line-up. He has been a part of the national program ever since, most recently played for Australian at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

With Broekhoff achieving his NBA dream today, this could see the Australian Boomers suit up a World Cup team where all twelve players have NBA experience. Just to say something like that would have been called insanity only a few years ago.

A potential 2019 FIBA World Cup squad which only players with NBA experience would include;

Frontcourt: Aron Baynes, Andrew Bogut, Jonah Bolden*, Thon Maker, Cam Bairstow, Mangok Mathiang

Backcourt: Ryan Broekhoff, Ben Simmons, Matthew Dellavedova, Dante Exum, Joe Ingles, Patty Mills

* Jonah Bolden is expected to sign and play with the Philadelphia 76ers for the 2018-19 NBA season.

It’s expected that Broekhoff will join the Mavericks in Las Vegas for summer league but won’t play any games there. Broekhoff will officially become a Dallas Maverick when the NBA Moratorium ends on July 7 (AEST) and players can officially sign NBA contracts.
