Oral Roberts finished 13-14 as an independent that season, and Wright shot 48.4 percent from the field and 53.8 percent at the foul line while averaging 1.7 made field goals and 0.5 made free throws per game.

After that freshman year he transferred back home to Washington, D.C., and sat out the 1978-79 season before beginning his Howard career.

At Howard in 1979-80, Wright stepped into the backcourt for head coach A.B. Williamson and played 28 games for a Bison team that went 21-7, won the MEAC regular-season title, and captured the MEAC tournament title.

He averaged 9.1 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 7.0 assists per game that season, shot 45.2 percent from the field and 75.3 percent from the free throw line, and set a Howard single-season assists mark with 195.

Howard carried that momentum into 1980-81, finishing 17-12 overall and 6-4 in MEAC play, placing second in the conference regular season before winning the MEAC tournament and taking the first NCAA tournament bid in school and conference history.

Wright played 28 games in 1980-81 and averaged 6.7 points, 1.7 rebounds, and 5.5 assists per game, while shooting 38.3 percent from the field and 71.2 percent at the line.

He totaled 187 points, 48 rebounds, and 154 assists in that junior season, and in the MEAC title win over North Carolina A&T he scored 13 points, handed out three assists, and made four free throws in the final 17 seconds to help seal Howard’s first NCAA berth.

In Howard’s NCAA tournament loss to Wyoming, Wright played 33 minutes and finished with five points, four rebounds, three assists, and four steals.

As a senior in 1981-82, Wright again played 28 games for Howard and averaged 7.6 points, 1.3 rebounds, and 4.8 assists per game while shooting 39.8 percent from the field and 69.0 percent at the foul line.

He handed out 135 assists in 1981-82, and across his three Howard seasons from 1979-80 through 1981-82 he averaged 7.8 points and 5.8 assists per game.

Wright finished his Howard career with 484 assists, which kept him among the top assist producers in school history and placed him seventh on the MEAC career assist list.

His Howard years also included back-to-back MEAC tournament championships in 1980 and 1981, two All-MEAC selections, two All-Tournament selections, and later recognition in the Howard Athletics Hall of Fame, while his jersey was raised at Burr Gymnasium.
