Stone joined Melbourne for the 2007 Big V State Championship Men season, beginning a long Tigers state-league run. The Melbourne-born guard was born on 9 September 1987 and came through the club’s junior, VBL and ABA pathway.
Stone continued with Melbourne in the 2008 Big V State Championship Men season, playing Championship Division minutes for the Tigers. In a 2008 SCM game, he went 2-from-2 from the field and 1-from-1 from three-point range in 12:07, finishing with five points, two rebounds and one steal.
Stone remained with Melbourne for the 2009 Big V State Championship Men season and was a key member of the Tigers’ State Championship side. That team included Daryl Corletto, Matt O’Hea, Tommy Greer, Daniel Johnson, Adrian Sturt and Boden Westover, and Stone’s Melbourne Big V career ultimately reached 103 Championship Division games.
Stone stayed with Melbourne for the 2010 Big V State Championship Men season. He scored 10 points with three rebounds in 20:25 against Diamond Valley at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre on 18 April, shooting 4-from-8 from the field and 1-from-4 from three-point range in a 79–77 loss.
Stone returned with Melbourne for the 2011 Big V State Championship Men season, appearing in five games and logging 81:29 of court time. He shot 15-from-40 from the field and 6-from-16 from three-point range across that 2011 stint.
Stone played college basketball at Lassen College during the 2006–07 season before graduating from the program without transferring to an NCAA Division I institution.
In the 2006–07 season, Lassen College competed in the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) and participated in the Golden Valley Conference schedule under head coach Larry Friend.
During that 2006–07 campaign, Stone appeared in 28 games and started 24 of them, averaging 12.8 points per game while shooting 47.6% from the field and 33.3% from three-point range, along with 72.5% from the free-throw line.
Across those 28 games, he totaled 358 points, 164 rebounds (5.9 per game), 46 assists (1.6 per game), and 39 steals (1.4 per game), while logging over 750 total minutes played.
In conference play, he averaged 14.3 points per game and recorded six 20-point performances during the season, including a season-high 26-point outing in Golden Valley Conference competition.
Lassen finished the 2006–07 regular season with a 17–13 overall record and qualified for postseason play within the Northern California bracket.
Stone ranked among the team’s top three scorers for the year and was second on the roster in total rebounds, contributing on both the offensive and defensive glass throughout the campaign.
His 39 steals placed him among the team leaders defensively, and he also recorded 12 games with at least seven rebounds during the season.
