BIO: Ray Stearnes was born in Hobart (TAS) and began playing basketball as a junior with the Hobart basketball program.
Represented Southern Tasmania at all junior levels and was a part of Tasmania’s Under 20 state team in 1977.
Ray Stearnes made his NBL debut with the Hobart Devils at 23 years of age. He went scoreless in his first NBL game.
In 1983, after the demise of the Launceston Casino City Tigers saw the state without an NBL team, Hobart entered the NBL. The Devils would play their home games from Kingsborough Sports Centre and were coached by Keith Scott, who built a team around three Stanwix brothers, Warren, Brennan and Darren and imports Eric Bailey, Marty Green and Curtis Coleman, who had been a part of the defunct Launceston team in 1980.
Hobart would win their very first game of the season, a 45 point victory over fellow Tasmanian expansion team Devonport (85-40). The offensive firepower of import trio Bailey (25.0 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 1.4 steals), Green (21.0 points, 11.2 rebounds, and 1.0 blocks) and Curtis Coleman (11.6 points, 5.1 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 1.2 steals) would put points on the scoreboard, but the league’s newest team struggled to compete against the more talented programs in the competition.
After their initial win, the Devils would lose ten consecutive games until a surprise upset of Nunawading at home (81-73). Hobart would lose the remaining games for the season, finishing dead last with Devonport, who both finished win two wins for the season.
Steanes would appear in 14 games for the Devils, averaging 1.0 points and 0.3 assists for season.
1984
After the Devils debut in 1983, Hobart looked to improve by replacing coach Keith Scott with new import and player coach Danny Adamson. Leading scorer Eric Bailey and import Marty Green both returned from last season and local talent Simon Cottrell (via Illawarra) was signed to improve the team’s frontcourt.
While Bailey (29.3 points, 12.0 rebounds, 3.3 assists, and 1.8 steals) delivered his best NBL season, the story in Tasmania was the breakout season of Simon Cottrell (23.9 points, 14.4 rebounds, and 1.4 steals), who saw his numbers jump from 7 points per game the season prior and earn a spot in the Australian Boomers at the end of the season, as a result of his play in a Devils uniform.
During the season, Hobart were on the wrong side of history, when they allowed Adelaide to record 160 points in a game, the highest team score in NBL history. Although the Devils still struggled to be competitive, they were able to double their wins from two to four in the second year in the league. Stearnes would appear in 12 games during the season, averaging 1.6 points and 0.3 assists.
Ray Stearnes played two seasons the Hobart Devils. He averaged 1.2 points, 0.1 rebounds, and 0.2 assists in 26 NBL games.

READ MOREThe possibility of an NBL expansion team in Geelong has gained momentum, with league owner Larry Kestelman confirming the city is a strong candidate—provided it can secure a suitable venue. However, much like we outlined in an article a number of years ago, How the Geelong Supercats could return to the NBL within 3 years, the missing piece isn’t just a stadium, but a real estate-backed development plan to make the project financially viable. Kestelman recently acknowledged Geelong’s growing basketball scene, citing record participation numbers…
READ MOREThere have been championship runs in the NBL defined by dominance and the sheer weight of talent that could overwhelm opponents before the ball was tipped. The dynasties of Perth, the star-studded reign of Melbourne, and the rise of Sydney’s financial muscle all tell tales of powerhouses that knew how to stay at the top. But there has only ever been one championship like Wollongong’s in 2001—a title won through sheer resilience, a team that had no business being there until they forced their way…
