It seems the shortlist for Tasmania’s future NBL team has been finalised with the NBL filing for trademarks five new team names last week.
Seems like we’re down a shortlist of five names for the new Tasmania team. These names were trademarked last week… shame there’s no devils or huskies pic.twitter.com/WwJsYHJKUQ

The names are filed to be used for sporting and entertainment events, sports matches, film, video, radio and television production, basketball mascot performances, basketball cheerleader performances and dance team performances, making it certain that these are the prospective names for the soon to be announced Tasmania team.
The Tasmanian Tridents name is thought to be the front runner with many basketball figures getting behind the name including the former president of the Hobart Chargers David Barlett.
Only a few days left in the name your team comp for @NBLTasmania – I’ve jumped ship from the #Pride to the #TasmaniaTridents – three regions, one state, one weapon. #StickAForkInEm pic.twitter.com/rvFdzvgGEN

As well as Julian O’Brien, editor of the Illawarra Mercury newspaper, and rabid Hawks and NBL fan.
The prongs of the Trident represent the three parts of the State unified as one weapon. The weapon of Neptune, God of the Sea. If you support #TassieTridents please show your support by sharing this image. #TridentsRising @NBL @NBLTasmania #NBL21 pic.twitter.com/8OLMv5PHwn

The trademark application also included the new logos for the Sydney Kings who have had to remove the Sydney Opera House from its logo due to licencing costs.
Are the new Sydney Kings trying to emulate NBA logos with their new designs or is it simply coincidence pic.twitter.com/Wn3Hw7U6pO

An interesting note was in the same application the NBL has decided to trademark the names of the South East Melbourne Magic and Melbourne Tigers at the same time. For what purpose this is unknown, with the NBL veering heavily away from associating teams with their 1990’s counterparts ie. South East Melbourne and now Hobart have all gone in new directions instead of rekindling the Magic and Devils fan bases so it’s unlikely they bring either of those teams back.
Most likely it would be for use in the league’s heritage round each year where teams don the uniforms of past squads.
The competition to decide the name for what will be the league’s 10th franchise doesn’t close until Thursday night but with these five being trademarked by the league already, it seems one of these names will be on NBL jerseys at your nearest NBL venue soon.
