NBL EXPERIENCE
Ned Coten made his NBL debut with the Perth Wildcats on 25/5/1984. He went scoreless in his first NBL game.
In 1984, the Westate Wildcats were renamed to the Perth Wildcats, but success did not follow the name change immediately. With new head coach Lynn Massey now guiding the squad, Perth finished on the bottom of the ladder finish with only three wins. Captain Mike Ellis averaged 19.3 points, 2.7 rebounds, 6.7 assists and 3.4 steals per game and won the club MVP for the second time. Coten averaged 1 points, 0.5 rebounds, and 0.5 assists for the season.
COBURG GIANTS
1986
After not being re-signed by the Wildcat’s in 1987, Coten played a season in the state league before being given a opportunity to play for Cobourg, a team which had seen a mass exodus of its roster from last season. A dismal season for the Giants in 1985, coach Owen Hughan replaced with former Coburg player Les Riddle while stars Ray Borner, Chuck Harmison, Steve Davis and Benny Lewis all left the club to play with Illawarra, Bankstown, Nunawading and St Kilda respectively.
Riddle and the Giants made efforts to cover the loss of so many players, adding imports Willie Simmons and Jim Foster to the team, a young David Graham to fill the void. Losing the majority of the team’s core however, proved too much and the Giants missed the playoffs for the first time since 1981.
Cotensaw limitied opportunities to play during the season as the team compiled a 14-12 record and finished in eighth place. Missing the playoffs again and financial difficulties saw the Giants leave Coburg and re-brand to the North Melbourne Giants. This included a move into the CBD to play out of the much larger Melbourne Sports and Entertainment Centre (The Glasshouse).
PERTH WILDCATS
1989
Coten managed only one season with the Giants and then returned home to WA. After a number of seasons continuing to ply his trade in the state leagues he was again offered a chance to play in the NBL with the Wildcats in 1989. Again Coten saw limited opportunities to play but helped the Wildcat’s reach a third place finish in the regular season with a 16-8 record.
