BIO: Matt Hurt was born in Rochester, Minnesota, and attended John Marshall High School, where he played four years of varsity basketball. As a freshman in the 2015–16 season, he helped lead his team to a 26–4 record, followed by a 25–4 finish in his sophomore year.

Hurt’s breakout came during his junior season (2017–18), where he averaged 33.9 points, 15.1 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 4.3 blocks per game, guiding John Marshall to a 26–3 record and a berth in the section title game. That summer, he played on the Adidas Gauntlet Circuit with his AAU team, D1 Minnesota, where he posted 17.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 1.0 block per game, further establishing himself as one of the top high school prospects in the country.

As a senior, he took his game to another level, averaging 36.8 points, 12.4 rebounds, and 5.0 assists per game. His outstanding season earned him the prestigious Minnesota Mr. Basketball award. He was also selected to play in the 2019 McDonald’s All-American Game and the Nike Hoop Summit, competing alongside the nation’s best high school players.

Hurt later ommitted to Duke University, choosing the Blue Devils over offers from North Carolina, Kentucky, and Kansas.

FAMILY: Hurt’s older brother Michael played college basketball for Minnesota. His younger sister, Katie, is currently a sophomore playing for the Lehigh Mountain Hawks.

Hurt played for the gold medal winning United States under-18 basketball team at the 2018 FIBA Under-18 Americas Championship.

NBA EXPERIENCE

After going undrafted in the 2021 NBA Draft, Matt Hurt signed a two-way contract with the Houston Rockets on August 13, 2021, and competed for the team in the NBA Summer League. However, he was waived on September 24 before the start of training camp. On October 14, he signed with the Memphis Grizzlies but was released just two days later. He then joined the Memphis Hustle for the 2021–22 NBA G League season, where he remained until being released on January 24, 2022.

Hurt joined the Milwaukee Bucks for the 2022 NBA Summer League before briefly returning to the Grizzlies during the preseason. After being waived again, he rejoined the Memphis Hustle for the 2022–23 NBA G League season.

Following a stint with the Grizzlies in the 2023 NBA Summer League, Hurt re-signed with the team on September 30, 2023. However, he was waived on October 16 and once again rejoined the Hustle. On January 29, 2024, he signed a 10-day contract with the Grizzlies before returning to the Hustle on February 9. He signed a second 10-day contract with the Grizzlies on February 26 but was sent back to the Hustle on March 7. Over the course of the 2023–24 season, he appeared in eight NBA games for the Grizzlies.

Hurt played 8 games in the NBA. He averaged 4 points, 2 rebounds, and 0.5 assists per game over his NBA career.

COLLEGE

Hurt, a consensus five-star recruit who was ranked ninth in his class by Rivals, 16th by 247Sports, and 11th by ESPN, receiving a 96 grade from the network committed to Duke on April 19, 2019.

As a freshman at Duke, Hurt appeared in 31 games and made 22 starts, averaging 9.7 points and 3.8 rebounds per game and played alongside Aussie Jack White. He scored 19 points, dished out 3 assists, and blocked 2 shots in a 105–54 win over Central Arkansas. Later that month, he posted 20 points and 8 rebounds in an 83–70 victory against Winthrop. On December 31, he delivered a career-high 25 points in an 88–49 rout of Boston College.

Before the start of his sophomore season, Hurt was named to the watch lists for the John R. Wooden Award, Naismith Trophy, and Karl Malone Award. He became Duke’s leading scorer, averaging 18.3 points and 6.1 rebounds per game. On December 16, he tallied 18 points in a 75–65 win over Notre Dame. In January, he scored 26 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in a 79–68 win over Wake Forest, earning ACC Player of the Week honors. The following month, he put up 24 points in a 69–53 victory over NC State and added 22 points in an 84–60 win against Wake Forest. Days later, he led Duke to a 66–65 win over Virginia with another 22-point performance. He was named ACC Player of the Week again on February 22. At the conclusion of the season, he was voted ACC Most Improved Player and earned First-Team All-ACC honors.

After two seasons at Duke, Hurt declared for the 2021 NBA Draft.
