BIO: Martin Mclean was born in Moree (NSW) and began playing basketball as a junior with the Taree basketball program.
NBL EXPERIENCE
Martin Mclean made his NBL debut with the Newcastle Falcons at 21 years of age. He went scoreless in his first NBL game.
1994
Newcastle retooled its list in 1994, moving on from leading scorer Everette Stephens and handing the offense to former league MVP Derek Rucker, while Paul Simpson and Tonny Jensen (both via Townsville) arrived to deepen the guard rotation.
Rucker started with 18 assists on opening night and 40 points in Game 2, but after an 0–3 slide coach Tom Wisman pushed for broader lift, answered in Round 4 at Geelong when Rucker delivered 24 assists (some reports list 27) alongside a heavy scoring night to bank the first win.
The Falcons finished 13–13, placed ninth, and missed the postseason on a tiebreak to Illawarra despite matching records, making the early skid decisive in the final wash-up.
Derek Rucker (25.2 points, 5.2 rebounds, 10.6 assists, and 2.9 steals) led the league in assists and earned All-NBL Third Team recognition, with strong support from Terry Dozier (20.8 points, and 9.3 rebounds), Michael Johnson (14.3 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 2.4 assists), and Tonny Jensen (13.4 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 3.2 assists). Martin Mclean (6 points, and 2.2 rebounds) also appeared in all 26 games for the Falcons this season.
