COLLEGE

Epperson played college basketball at University of Toledo, As a freshman he was a forward under head coach Bob Nichols in the Mid-American Conference and immediately became one of Toledo’s main scorers and rebounders while helping the Rockets finish 15-11 overall and 7-9 in league play for eighth place in the MAC.

In 1981-82 he played 26 games and averaged 31.8 minutes, 16.2 points, 8.5 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game while shooting .541 from the field and .832 at the foul line, and his season totals were 420 points, 220 rebounds, 34 assists, 24 steals and 5 blocks in 826 minutes.

His 420 points in 1981-82 made him one of Toledo’s highest-scoring freshmen and he earned MAC Freshman of the Year honors that season.

As a sophomore in 1982-83 he again played for Nichols and Toledo improved to 17-12 overall and 10-8 in the MAC, finishing third in the conference before beating Kent State 79-64 in the MAC Tournament and then losing 70-59 to Ohio in the next round.

In 1982-83 he appeared in all 29 games and averaged 32.7 minutes, 18.1 points, 8.1 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game with a .536 field-goal percentage and .762 free-throw percentage, and he totaled 526 points, 235 rebounds, 38 assists, 30 steals and 11 blocks in 949 minutes.

He led Toledo in scoring in 1982-83, moved onto the All-MAC second team, and closed that year with a 79-64 MAC Tournament win over Kent State before Toledo’s season ended at Ohio.

As a junior in 1983-84 he had his best statistical season for a Toledo team that went 18-11 overall and 11-7 in the MAC, finished fourth in the league, defeated Northern Illinois 73-68 in the MAC Tournament at Rockford, and then lost 51-46 to Miami in the semifinals.

In 1983-84 he played 29 games and averaged 38.0 minutes, 20.4 points, 9.4 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game while shooting .564 from the floor and .774 from the line, and his season totals were 593 points, 272 rebounds, 32 assists, 19 steals and 3 blocks in 1102 minutes.

That junior season brought unanimous first-team All-MAC honors, All-MAC Tournament recognition, and one of the top single seasons in Toledo history because his 593 points rank among the best single-season point totals the program has recorded.

During that 1983-84 season he had several notable game performances, including 22 points in a 53-48 win at Eastern Michigan on January 7, 1984, 26 points in an 83-67 road win over Central Michigan on February 1, 1984, and 21 points in a 59-52 game against Ohio on February 25, 1984.

As a senior in 1984-85 he remained Toledo’s featured frontcourt scorer and rebounder on a team that finished 16-12 overall and 11-7 in the MAC for another third-place league finish before a 68-66 home loss to Ball State in the MAC Tournament quarterfinals.

In 1984-85 he played 28 games and averaged 33.0 minutes, 17.0 points, 8.3 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game while shooting .580 from the field and .777 at the foul line, and he produced 477 points, 233 rebounds, 48 assists, 16 steals and 10 blocks in 924 minutes.

He again earned unanimous first-team All-MAC honors in 1984-85 and was selected to the All-MAC Tournament team for the second time in his career.

A notable senior-year milestone came on December 29, 1984, when he hit two late free throws in a win over Idaho to become Toledo’s all-time career scoring leader.

He also had a major late-season performance on February 16, 1985, when he scored 22 points in Toledo’s 72-65 win over MAC-leading Ohio.

Across four varsity seasons at Toledo he played 112 games and finished with 3801 minutes, 786 field goals on 1415 attempts for a .555 field-goal percentage, 444 free throws on 566 attempts for a .784 free-throw percentage, 2016 points, 960 rebounds, 152 assists, 89 steals and 29 blocks, which works out to career averages of 18.0 points, 8.6 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game.

He left Toledo as the program’s career leader in points, rebounds, field goals made and field-goal attempts, and he also ranked among the program’s best career performers in field-goal percentage and free throws made.

His college career included no NCAA Tournament or NIT appearance, but he was one of the most decorated players of the Bob Nichols era, winning MAC Freshman of the Year, making three All-MAC teams, earning two unanimous first-team All-MAC selections, and twice being named All-MAC Tournament.

    • Why Newcastle’s NBL Return Is Closer Than You Think

The conversation around NBL expansion has intensified in recent years, with the league publicly confirming discussions with potential markets such as Canberra, the Gold Coast, and Darwin. However, one city that continues to quietly build momentum as a realistic candidate for a future franchise is Newcastle. While it may not always dominate the expansion headlines, the pieces required for an NBL return are slowly aligning, and according to former owner of the Illawarra Hawks, Dorry Kordahi, the push for a Newcastle team is very real.…

This has been something I’ve been thinking about and discussing with people since Indigenous Round.I think we all need a little perspective sometimes. https://t.co/2D65bvtS5K — Michael Randall (@MickRandallHS) February 3, 2026 But the argument that any criticism of the National Basketball League’s social-issue…

    • Japan’s Emergence as a Major Destination for Australian Basketball Talent

Five to ten years ago, if an Australian headed to Japan, it was typically because of not making NBL roster spots. Players like Venky Jois, Daniel Dillon and Rhys Vague fit this profile. Now Australian basketballers looking to play overseas rarely viewed Japan as a serious career destination. The traditional pathways pointed elsewhere, but that perception has shifted rapidly. Today, Japan’s B.League has emerged as a legitimate and increasingly attractive option for Australian players seeking strong contracts, defined roles, and long-term professional stability.Today, that narrative…
