BIO: Joshua Davey was born in Perth (WA)
Joshua Davey made his NBL debut with the Cairns Taipans on 17/9/2022. He scored four points in his first game.
Joshua Davey joined the Cairns Taipans as a development player ahead of the 2022/23 NBL season. Cairns retained key players such as Tahjere McCall, Majok Deng, Bul Kuol, and Keanu Pinder while adding standout talent, including Sam Waardenburg (three-year deal), Lat Mayen, Jonah Antonio, and Ben Ayre, who was promoted from an injury replacement role. The Taipans also replaced imports Scott Machado and Stephen Zimmerman with DJ Hogg and Shannon Scott, assembling the youngest roster in the league. Despite low expectations, Cairns started the season strong with several early upsets.
The Taipans defied predictions of a bottom-place finish by opening with wins over Tasmania (106–84), South East Melbourne (85–76), and Sydney (83–78), compiling a 5-1 record, with their only loss to Perth (76–105). Known for snapping opponents’ win streaks, Cairns ended Brisbane’s three-game run (90–82) and Sydney’s 17-game road streak (94–88) in an overtime thriller.
Though Cairns hovered near the top of the ladder for most of the season, they faced challenges when Keanu Pinder suffered an ankle injury in December. However, the team responded with a five-game winning streak, notching victories over Adelaide (86–83), Brisbane (107–81), and New Zealand (85–83).
Pinder’s late-season eye injury sidelined him for the playoffs, forcing Cairns into the play-in tournament after finishing third with an 18–10 record. DJ Hogg led the Taipans to a 91–78 win over Perth in the play-in game, scoring a club playoff record 32 points. This earned Cairns a semifinal matchup against Sydney, where they dropped Game 1 (95–87) as Xavier Cooks dominated with 27 points and 14 rebounds. Game 2 saw DJ Hogg (25 points, 8 rebounds) and Tahjere McCall (20 points, 7 assists) shine as Cairns leveled the series (93–82).
In Game 3, Sydney’s defense locked down Cairns, holding them to their lowest score of the season in a 79–64 loss. Dejan Vasiljevic hit crucial three-pointers to lead the Kings with 15 points, while Ben Ayre led Cairns with 20 points (4-8 from three).
Joshua Davey appeared in 18 games during the season, averaging 0.3 points, 1.2 rebounds, and 0.1 assists.

READ MOREThe possibility of an NBL expansion team in Geelong has gained momentum, with league owner Larry Kestelman confirming the city is a strong candidate—provided it can secure a suitable venue. However, much like we outlined in an article a number of years ago, How the Geelong Supercats could return to the NBL within 3 years, the missing piece isn’t just a stadium, but a real estate-backed development plan to make the project financially viable. Kestelman recently acknowledged Geelong’s growing basketball scene, citing record participation numbers…
READ MOREThere have been championship runs in the NBL defined by dominance and the sheer weight of talent that could overwhelm opponents before the ball was tipped. The dynasties of Perth, the star-studded reign of Melbourne, and the rise of Sydney’s financial muscle all tell tales of powerhouses that knew how to stay at the top. But there has only ever been one championship like Wollongong’s in 2001—a title won through sheer resilience, a team that had no business being there until they forced their way…
