NBL EXPERIENCE

Josh Magette made his NBL debut with the Tasmania JackJumpers at 32 years of age. He scored 19 points in his first game.

A cerebral left-hander with extraordinary handles and unlimited range, Josh Magette joined the Tasmania JackJumpers as their pass-first point guard to support fellow imports MiKyle McIntosh and Josh Adams in the team’s inaugural season in the NBL.

The JackJumpers began their debut campaign with low expectations, as multiple betting agencies offered 400:1 odds of them winning the championship. However, Tasmania shocked the Brisbane Bullets in their NBL debut on December 3, 2021, with an 83-74 overtime victory at MyState Bank Arena in Hobart. Despite the promising start, the team struggled through the early rounds.

Heading into Round 8, Tasmania had managed just one additional win and sat ninth on the ladder with a 2-6 record. A season-ending injury to marquee signing Will Magnay further complicated matters, forcing head coach Scott Roth to pivot from a perimeter-focused game plan to a more balanced, team-oriented approach. The adjustment proved successful, as the JackJumpers closed the season with an impressive 10 wins from their last 12 games, finishing 17-11 and securing fifth spot on the ladder.

Magette (11.7 points, 4.1 rebounds, 5.9 assists) played a crucial role in orchestrating the JackJumpers’ turnaround. The team’s playoff hopes received a dramatic boost when the South East Melbourne Phoenix defeated the Perth Wildcats in the final game of the regular season. The result allowed Tasmania to leapfrog Perth into fourth place on points percentage, earning a spot in the postseason and a semifinal matchup against the reigning champions and top-seeded Melbourne United.

Tasmania dropped Game One of the semifinals 74-63 on Melbourne’s home court but responded with a gritty performance to even the series on their home floor. Magette (12 points, 7 assists) was pivotal in the team’s offensive flow during the victory. In Game Three, fortune favored the JackJumpers once more as Melbourne’s captain Chris Goulding was ruled out with injury. Tasmania capitalized on the opportunity, clinching a thrilling 76-73 win to advance to the Grand Final series.

The Sydney Kings, fresh off a 2-0 series victory over the Illawarra Hawks, awaited the JackJumpers in the championship round. Sydney’s dominance carried over into Game One, where they secured a commanding 95-78 victory. Magette (11 points, 6 assists) fought hard to create opportunities, but the Kings’ firepower proved too much.

Game Two was historic, as it marked the first NBL Grand Final game ever played in Hobart. The JackJumpers gave everything they had, with Josh Adams delivering a spectacular 36-point performance in front of a sellout crowd. Despite Adams’ heroics, the Kings narrowly edged Tasmania 90-86. Sydney was buoyed by a trio of 20-point performances from Xavier Cooks, Jarell Martin (shooting an incredible 80% from the field), and Dejan Vasiljevic, whose late-game three-pointer sealed the win. Magette (8 points, 9 assists) provided excellent playmaking but couldn’t overcome the Kings’ depth.

The Kings sealed the series in Game Three, ending their 17-year championship drought with a dominant 97-88 victory in front of 16,000 fans at Qudos Bank Arena. Xavier Cooks and Jarell Martin combined for 45 points and 29 rebounds, securing Sydney’s 19th win in their final 21 games. Magette (10 points, 7 assists) continued to orchestrate the JackJumpers’ offense but couldn’t prevent the Kings from completing their historic run.

Josh Magette played two seasons the Tasmania JackJumpers. He averaged 11 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 5.2 assists in 62 NBL games.
