BIO: Joel Wagner was born in Perth (WA) and started playing basketball with the Perth Redbacks under 12’s team as a 10-year-old. At 16 he began playing with the Redbacks state league team.

NBL EXPERIENCE

Joel Wagner made his NBL debut with the Perth Wildcats at 21 years of age. He went scoreless in his first NBL game.

Wagner signed with Perth as a development player in 2009 training and playing alongside Martin Cattalini, Shawn Redhage and Damian Martin. In his rookie season, Wagner averaged 1.3 points, 1.3 rebounds, and 1.4 assists and helped guide the Wildcat’s to a first place regular finish (17-11).

Wagner did not play in the team’s playoff games but was able to watch the Wildcat’s defeated the fourth placed Gold Coast Blaze in two straight games before the team eliminated the Wollongong Hawks in three games.

2010/11
The following year, a injury saw a point guard spot open up at the Kings and a Friday night phone call from Sydney’s coach Conner Henry saw Joel on a plane to Sydney the next day. His increased opportunity at Sydney saw his minutes jump from less than one per game to 11 as he saw minutes in 15 games that season, averaging 1.3 points, 1.3 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game. Wagner was not re-signed at the end of the season.

While Joel’s NBL career ended up being short, he says he has no regrets and feels that getting to that level with where his talent was at was a pretty big achievement.

Joel Wagner played two seasons in the NBL, playing for both the Perth Wildcats and the Sydney Kings. He averaged 1.1 points, 1 rebounds, and 1.1 assists in 20 NBL games.

STATE LEAGUE EXPERIENCE

  • Perth 2004-22

Wagner began playing with the Perth Redbacks state league team in 2004 where he made his debut against Willetton and later notched up his first start at 16 years of age.

Wagner continued to play for Perth his entire state league career and after struggling to play regular minutes in 2004 and 2005, playing behind AJ Johnson and Wade Horwood, he delivered a breakout season in 2006.

After spending two years as a development player in the NBL he returned to the Perth Redbacks, going on to play 395 games in the WA state league (SBL) and finished the all-time assists leader in SBL/NBL1 West history. He played in more SBL/NBL1 games for Perth Redbacks than any other player and was awarded Perth Redbacks Life Membership in 2019.

His state league highlights include two SBL All-Star team selections, winning the 2017 SBL Championship and overtaking Troy Clarke in 2019 as the SBL/NBL1 all-time assists leader.

The possibility of an NBL expansion team in Geelong has gained momentum, with league owner Larry Kestelman confirming the city is a strong candidate—provided it can secure a suitable venue. However, much like we outlined in an article a number of years ago, How the Geelong Supercats could return to the NBL within 3 years, the missing piece isn’t just a stadium, but a real estate-backed development plan to make the project financially viable. Kestelman recently acknowledged Geelong’s growing basketball scene, citing record participation numbers…

    • The Wollongong Hawks’ 2001 NBL Championship: The defining moment of an underdog’s rise

There have been championship runs in the NBL defined by dominance and the sheer weight of talent that could overwhelm opponents before the ball was tipped. The dynasties of Perth, the star-studded reign of Melbourne, and the rise of Sydney’s financial muscle all tell tales of powerhouses that knew how to stay at the top. But there has only ever been one championship like Wollongong’s in 2001—a title won through sheer resilience, a team that had no business being there until they forced their way…

Daniels is Leading the NBA in Every Key Defensive Stat There’s no argument against Daniels’ defensive dominance this…

Sydney Kings captain Xavier Cooks has served most of his one-month suspension for testing positive for cocaine but may still face additional disciplinary action from his club. Basketball Australia later confirmed the ban, though the club initially cited “personal leave” as the reason for his absence. Despite the violation, Sydney Kings officials reportedly want to retain Cooks, who remains under contract for…
