NBL EXPERIENCE

Joe Wieskamp made his NBL debut with the South East Melbourne Phoenix at 25 years of age. He scored 12 points in his first game.

The departure of franchise cornerstone Mitch Creek and import centre Alan Williams paved the way for significant roster changes at South East Melbourne ahead of the 2024/25 season. Creek, the club’s all-time leading scorer, opted to pursue opportunities overseas, while Williams was mutually released despite having one year left on his deal. To fill these voids, the Phoenix quickly rebuilt around veteran Australian talents Nathan Sobey (via Brisbane), Jordan Hunter, and Angus Glover (both via Sydney), with all three joining on multi-year contracts. The team also bolstered its scoring punch by adding import trio Derrick Walton Jr., Matt Hurt, and Joe Wieskamp—who joined the Phoenix on a one-year deal after a Summer League stint with the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Despite finishing at the bottom of the standings the previous season, South East Melbourne retained Mike Kelly as head coach entering the new campaign. However, after losing the first five games, the organisation opted for a coaching change. Assistant coach Sam Mackinnon was elevated to interim head coach and immediately guided the Phoenix to a crucial 93–84 victory over Melbourne United. Jordan Hunter (20 points and 9 rebounds) and Nathan Sobey (16 points, 5 rebounds, 3 steals, and 2 assists) excelled in the breakthrough win, with Sobey particularly benefiting from a return to the starting lineup after being relegated to the bench during Kelly’s tenure.

Under Mackinnon, the Phoenix followed up with a commanding 88–62 road win against New Zealand before narrowly losing to Illawarra. Shortly thereafter, American coach Josh King, previously head coach in the Turkish National League, was appointed on a two-year contract. Phoenix General Manager Simon Mitchell praised King’s appointment, noting, “Josh brings a strong reputation, a clear philosophy, and a high-energy game style that aligns perfectly with our vision.”

King made an immediate impression, coaching the Phoenix to victory in his debut on November 1, defeating reigning champions Tasmania (77–75). He engineered a remarkable turnaround, guiding South East Melbourne from their 0–5 start to finish with a 16–13 record and fourth place on the ladder. This achievement marked the first time in the 40-minute era that a team reached the playoffs after starting winless through five games, earning King runner-up honours in Coach of the Year voting.

Playing alongside fellow import forward Matt Hurt (20.1 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 1.3 assists) and Nathan Sobey (17 points, 4 rebounds, 4.7 assists, and 1.4 steals) , Joe Wieskamp (10.9 points and 4.9 rebounds) offered reliable shooting and floor spacing but struggled to find consistency across the season. Wieskamp delivered standout performances including 22 points against Illawarra (December 31) and 20 points with 9 rebounds in a blowout win over Tasmania (January 25), but also recorded several quiet outings such as a 0-point effort against Cairns (November 10) and just 2 points against Brisbane (December 12), underscoring his fluctuating impact from game to game.

Playing alongside fellow import forward Matt Hurt (20.1 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 1.3 assists) and veteran guard Nathan Sobey (17 points, 4 rebounds, 4.7 assists, and 1.4 steals), Joe Wieskamp (10.9 points and 4.9 rebounds) provided dependable perimeter shooting and spacing but battled inconsistency throughout the campaign. His top performances included 22 points against Illawarra (December 31) and a 20-point, 9-rebound showing in a dominant win over Tasmania (January 25). However, those highs were offset by quiet games such as a scoreless outing against Cairns (November 10) and a 2-point performance against Brisbane (December 12), highlighting the variable nature of his production.

South East Melbourne advanced to the postseason via the newly introduced play-in tournament. After losing their opening seeding game to Perth, the Phoenix faced a do-or-die clash against Adelaide for a spot in the semi-finals. Down by 19 at halftime, they rallied behind a roaring home crowd to complete a remarkable comeback and secure an 85–75 win. Joe Wieskamp (16 points) played a vital role on the wing, while Matt Hurt (25 points) anchored the offence and Ben Ayre (17 points) provided a timely boost off the bench, lifting the Phoenix into the next round.

In the semi-final series against Illawarra, Joe Wieskamp (22 points) paced the Phoenix offensively in Game 1 at Wollongong, knocking down three triples to keep his side in touch. Despite his efforts, a dominant showing from Gary Clark (26 points, 10 rebounds) propelled the Hawks to a 95–81 victory. With their season on the line in Game 2 at John Cain Arena, Wieskamp added 11 important points, complementing standout performances from Matt Hurt (30 points, 8 rebounds) and Nathan Sobey (25 points, 8 rebounds) as South East Melbourne claimed a high-scoring 101–94 win to force a deciding Game 3.

In the decisive Game 3 back in Wollongong, Joe Wieskamp (25 points and 6 rebounds) continued his postseason excellence, leading the Phoenix in scoring. However, Illawarra proved too strong, closing out the series with a dominant 126–96 victory. The Hawks were led by Tyler Harvey (28 points), Gary Clark (21 points and 9 rebounds), and Sam Froling (17 points and 10 rebounds), overwhelming South East Melbourne with their offensive firepower and depth.

Joe Wieskamp currently plays for the South East Melbourne Phoenix and has played 28 games in his NBL career. He has averaged 10.9 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 0.6 assists since entering the league in 2024.
