International POTW: Brad Newley & David Barlow 26/11/12

Aussie Basketballer’s are back running up and down the hardwood in stadiums all across Europe and the USA. Therefor it’s time to bring back our International Player of the Week.

Each week the AussieHoopla.com Player of the Week award goes to the Aussie who has had the greatest impact both on the stat sheet and their teams record. This weeks winner is….

Brad Newley & David Barlow

Two of the mainstays of the Australian National team went head to head this week when David Barlow faced off against Brad Newley in Spain’s ACB. Brad Newley came home with a victory, however it was David Barlow who had the better individual performance. In what was a great display of Australian basketball, Aussie Hoopla decided to have our first ever joint winner of the International Player of the Week award.

In what was their 5th consecutive victory, Gran Canaria (7-2) defeated UCAM Murcia (4-5) 99-97 in an overtime thriller. The boys from Oz really put on a show with David Barlow finishing with 19 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals and Brad Newley notching up 17 points, 5 rebounds.  Newley, who has had the better season statistically thus far, is averaging 12.4ppg, 4.2rpg, 1.6apg and 1.1spg so far this season. Barlow currently averages 7.4ppg, 4.8rpg, 1.2apg and 1.1spg.

Former Teams: Montepaschi Siena (Italy), New Orleans Hornets (NBA), Toronto Raptors (NBA), Houston Rockets (NBA), CSKA Moscow (Euroleague), Wollongong Hawks (NBL),

David Andersen day in, day out just continues to solidfy his greatness in European Basketball lore. This week he led Fenerbahce Ulker to an easy victory over the ninth-ranked Tofas (3-4) 74-66 in the Turkish TBL. Andersen was the MVP of the game, recording 15 points 7 rebounds and 3 assists in 25 minutes. After a shaky start Fenerbahce Ulker (6-1) currently sits third in the TBL and have started tp show signs of the dominant team they were predicted to be. In Andersens first year with the team he is averaging 7.3ppg, 4.0rpg and shooting 33.3% from downtown.

Aron Baynes

Hometown: Cairns, QLD

Current Team: Union Olimpija (Slovenia – Slovenian League, Adriatic League and Euroleague)

Former Teams: Lietuvos Rytas (Lithuania), EWE Baskets Oldenburg (Germany) Ikaros Kallitheas (Greece)

No stranger to this section is Aron Baynes, who has continued to dominate the Euroleague on the back of newsthat  two NBA squads have indicated an interest in the 208cm powerhouse. Aron Baynes notched up 16 points and 7 rebounds but this performance couldn’t stop Union Olimpija (4-6) from falling short 86-82 against Partizan (8-2). Baynes is averaging 11.3ppg, 4.8rpg and shooting 60.8% (45-74) in his team’s Adriatic League play.

Aleks Maric

Hometown: Sydney, NSW

Current Team: Lokomotiv Kuban (Russia – VTB League, Eurocup)

Former Teams: Nebraska (NCAA), KK Partizan (Serbia), Panathinaikos (Greece)

Aleks Maric was a monster on the boards in Lokomotiv Kuban’s 74-65 victory against Triumph Lyubertsy (3-3) in the VTB United League. Maric put together a double-double performance  scoring 10 points and 10 rebounds Lokomotiv Kuban (4-2). Playing well for Triuumph Lyubertsy was former Wollongong Hawk Tywain McKee who had 23 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists. This win moves Lokomotiv Kuban into third in group B.  Maric has been the leagues leading rebound the entire year and current averages 11.8ppg, 10.2rpg and 1.7spg for the season.
