Geelong Supercats Men & Women both fall to Dandenong Rangers

St Laurence Geelong Supercats outscored the Dandenong Rangers 27-24 and 30-23 in the third and fourth quarters respectively – but unfortunately a dismal first half had already done the damage.

The St Laurence Geelong Supercats outscored the Dandenong Rangers 27-24 and 30-23 in the third and fourth quarters respectively – but unfortunately a dismal first half had already done the damage.

Dandenong had the hot hand early, with players knocking three pointers down from all over the court, while Geelong struggled to find their outside rhythm in the first two quarters.

Despite a massive 31 point haul from sole import Theron Wilson, as well as 10 rebounds to give him a double double, the Supercats were unable to match Dandenong’s even spread of scoring.

Dandenong import Daqueon Montreal did not suit up for the Rangers with a suspected ankle injury, but it was Andrew Harms who could not be contained by Geelong.

Dom Friend brought a spark to the final quarter with 2 back to back three pointers to give the bus load of Supercats supporters who made the trip up some hope, but Dandenong responded to everything the Supercats could bring. Nick Owusu continued his recent good form, finishing the game with 21 points, including 5/6 three pointers.

The team will now return to the Geelong Arena next weekend to host the Bendigo Braves, who defeated the Frankston Blues in the SEABL East Conference Elimination final. The winner of the Supercats vs Bendigo game will play the Dandenong Rangers in Dandenong in two weeks time in the East conference grand final.

The Roderick Geelong Lady Supercats suffered their third defeat in as many games against the Dandenong Rangers in the SEABL East conference women’s semi-final 73-45.

After a fantastic start with the Supercats having an answer for everything Dandenong threw at the them, the Rangers led by just 3 points at quarter time.

But the Lady Supercats were unable to match the intensity in the second quarter, with Geelong simply unable to score. The Lady Supercats scored just 6 points to the Dandenong Rangers 17 in the second quarter and were unable to recover.

The third quarter was not much better, with Dandenong outscoring Geelong 20-8 to set up a 26 points lead at three quarter time. Although the Lady Supercats regrouped and managed to score 16 points in the last quarter, it was too late and the Rangers ran out 28 point winners.

The Lady Supercats were unable to contain Rangers star Stephanie Cumming, who top scored for the game with 28 points. Despite having to leave the court for a short time with a foot injury, Deanna Smith top scored for Geelong with 17 points, while Candice Rogers contributed 13 points and 8 rebounds.

The girls will return to their home court of the Geelong Arena next weekend, where they have lost just two games for the year, to host the Sandringham Sabres, who defeated the Bendigo Lady Braves in the East Conference elimination final.

The winner of the Supercats vs Sabres game will return to the Dandenong Basketball Stadium in two weeks time to face the Rangers again in the East Conference women’s grand final.
