Geelong Supercats Men and Women both fall to Dandenong in SEABL conference finals

The St Laurence Geelong Supercats lead by 2 points with less than a minute remaining in the game before an off balance three point shot from Dandenong import Tony Lewis put the Rangers in front by a point. Despite getting it back down to their offensive end, the Supercats couldn’t get a shot off and ended up fouling the Rangers to send them to the line for two made free throws to seal the game with less thatn a second to play.

It was a different game to the semi-final two weeks ago, with Geelong exploding out of the blocks from the start. Theron Wilson hit a three to start the match off and the Supercats held the lead for most of the first quarter, before two late baskets saw Dandenong take the lead going in to quarter time.

The second quarter was again a close fought contest, with both teams going basket for basket and the lead changing numerous times. Dandenong again went in to the main break in front, but some magnificent three’s from Dominic Friend and Nick Owusu kept Geelong in the game in the third quarter – taking a 2 points lead at the final break.

The last quarter had the crowd on their feet, with 300 Geelong Supporters bringing the house down with their loud cheering. Despite a 7 point lead by Dandenong with just 3 minutes left, the Supercats fought back again in a tough match up.

Club Stalwart Seb Loader was outstanding again for the Supercats, managing yet another double double for the season with 12 points and 16 rebounds. Theron Wilson top scored for the Supercats with 17 points and 6 rebounds, while Nick Owusu finished with 14 points and Jamie Medved and Dominic Friend contributed 12 points each.

Reigning champions the Dandenong Rangers proved too experienced for our Roderick Geelong Lady Supercats as they were defeated in the SEABL East Conference Women’s Grand Final 88-47.

Scoring just 6 points in the first quarter, turnovers and shooting percentages were costly for Geelong. Despite some tough defense to force turnovers at the Dandenong end as well, the Supercats were down by 12 points at the first break.

The second quarter started with two quick threes from the Rangers, but the Supercats managed to reign in it and stay with the home team for the first half of the quarter. A poor shooting percentage would once again be telling in the scoreline as they headed in to the main break down 45-23.

A very fiery third quarter saw three unsportsmanlike fouls handed out in a matter of two minutes – with two of those going to Geelong import Abby Schrader, meaning that she was unable to return to the game as her second unsportsmanlike was disqualifying. Missing Schrader and with marquee player Deanna Smith also in foul trouble, the Lady Supercats continued to struggle to get to the basket, scoring just 10 points for the quarter.

Deanna Smith was also fouled out in the fourth quarter as the Lady Supercats simply could not match the scoring power of the Rangers. Only two players finished the game in double figures, with Cortney Williamson top scoring with 11 points and Candice Rogers 10 points.

The Roderick Geelong Lady Supercats finish the 2012 season as SEABL East Conference Runners Up in just their second year of competition in the league – an outstanding achievement and we look forward to continuing that level of success in 2013.

Both the Roderick Geelong Lady Supercats and the St Laurence Geelong Supercats finished the 2012 season as SEABL East Conference Runners Up and look forward to the 2013 season and chasing yet another championship.
