COLLEGE

Fox played college basketball at UC Irvine, As a freshman he was part of the Anteaters’ freshman program in 1968-69 and quickly emerged as one of the young guards expected to push for varsity minutes the following season.

UC Irvine was an independent program in the NCAA College Division during Fox’s time there, and he moved onto the varsity in 1969-70 when Tim Tift took over as head coach and led the Anteaters to a 17-9 record at Crawford Hall.

As a sophomore guard in 1969-70, Fox came up from the freshman team into a backcourt that also included Mike Barnes, Keith Bean and Steve Sabins, and he produced one of the season’s notable reserve performances when he scored a season-high 21 points in a win over Cal State Fullerton.

That 1969-70 team closed strongly after a 6-7 start, won 11 of its last 13 games, and finished 17-9 without reaching a postseason tournament.

Fox returned in 1970-71 as a junior and remained with Tim Tift’s independent UC Irvine side, which finished 16-10 and opened the year with a 95-55 win over Sonoma State before taking out the Kris Kringle Klassic in December 1970.

During the 1970-71 season, Fox developed into UC Irvine’s main playmaker and led the team in assists with 78 in 20 games, which worked out to 3.9 assists per game.

He was also described as a high-scoring guard during that season and carried an 18.9 points per game average into tournament play at UC Davis.

Fox’s floor leadership was a recurring part of his role in 1970-71, and he was specifically praised alongside Troy Rolph for directing the team under pressure during the early part of the season.

Across his two varsity seasons at UC Irvine, Fox played 46 games while helping the Anteaters post a combined 33-19 record under Tift.

Full season-by-season scoring, rebounding, shooting and starting data is not available for his UC Irvine career, but his place on the 1969-70 and 1970-71 varsity rosters, his 78 assists in 1970-71, his 21-point sophomore season high, and his 18.9 points per game scoring clip during his junior season stand out among the clearest details from his college years.
