STATE LEAGUE EXPERIENCE
- Gold Coast (2009–2012), North Gold Coast (2021–2023, 2026)
Gurney joined Gold Coast for the 2009 Queensland Basketball League season where the Goannas reached the quarter-finals before losing 110–100 to South West Metro and he led the league in free throw percentage at 91.9%.
Gold Coast continued with Gurney in 2010 where the Goannas opened their home campaign with a 94–82 win over Toowoomba at The Southport School and he added 22 points in the victory.
That season, the Goannas finished seventh at 10–8, beat Northside 91–81 in the quarter-finals and lost 87–48 to Rockhampton in the semi-finals.
He played for the Gold Coast Rollers in the 2011 Queensland Basketball League season where the Rollers finished second at 15–3 before their campaign ended with an 87–86 knockout quarter-final loss to Brisbane after Thalo Green (failure to qualify), Jason Aucoin (knee injury), Christian Salecich (World University Games) and Adam Gibson (Boomers camp) all were unable to play, and he again led the league in free throw percentage at 84.71%.
Gurney remained with the Gold Coast Rollers for the 2012 Queensland Basketball League season where he was named in the QBL men’s squad, earned Round 6 Player of the Week honours, and Gold Coast finished sixth at 9–7 before beating Northside 72–58 and losing 86–67 to Rockhampton in the finals.
Gurney joined North Gold Coast for the 2021 Queensland State League season where the Seahawks reached the QSL1 grand final, he ranked second in the league in scoring at 23 points per game, and his season ended with 14 points and 10 rebounds in an 89–77 grand final loss to Brisbane Capitals.
North Gold Coast brought him back for the 2022 NBL1 North season where he played 16 games and produced a 25-point game against Rockhampton on June 11.
He re-signed with North Gold Coast for the 2023 NBL1 North season where he played 15 games and remained part of the Seahawks roster alongside Biwali Bayles, Josh Duach and Kody Stattman.
During that season, Gurney helped North Gold Coast beat Northside 83–68 on April 2 with 17 points on 4-of-6 three-point shooting after making three fourth-quarter triples, and later had 17 points, four rebounds and three assists in a 103–99 overtime loss to South West Metro on July 15.
Gurney was appointed North Gold Coast’s NBL1 Men’s head coach for the 2026 season as the Seahawks prepared to return to NBL1 North competition, with his coaching background at the club also including the Seahawks QSL Women’s team.
