STATE LEAGUE EXPERIENCE

  • AIS (2009), Central Districts (2013–2016), Woodville (2017)

Carlin joined the AIS for the 2009 state league season, with the Rose Park-born centre spending one year in the Australian Institute of Sport basketball program. The 19 January 1993-born Carlin was part of a men’s scholarship group that included Cameron Bairstow, Jason Cadee, Mitchell Creek, Anthony Drmic, Hugh Greenwood, Jeromie Hill and Corban Wroe.

Carlin joined Central Districts for the 2013 Premier League season after returning from his college pathway, reconnecting with the club where he had developed as a junior. His role with Central Districts continued into the following seasons, giving the Lions a frontcourt player with size, rebounding and rim protection in South Australia’s senior state league.

Central Districts retained Carlin for the 2014 Central ABL season and worked him back into the line-up during the year. He had seven points and five rebounds in a 70–65 win over Sturt in Round 8, helping the Lions extend their winning run to four games and move into fourth place on the ladder.

Carlin continued with Central Districts for the 2015 Premier League season and entered the year as a senior frontcourt option for the Lions. During that season, he was recognised as a 206cm Central Districts forward and was selected by Adelaide coach Joey Wright for a July summer league team at the Worldwide Invitational in Las Vegas, with that opportunity coming while he was playing locally for the Lions.

Central Districts again used Carlin in the 2016 Premier League season, where he was one of the Lions’ major contributors. He led the competition in blocked shots at 1.6 per game, finished as Central Districts’ top Woollacott Medal vote-getter with 17 votes, and the Lions finished ninth with a 3–18 record.

Carlin joined Woodville for the 2017 Premier League season after leaving Central Districts, moving with former Central players Chris Clausen, Luke Frost and Myles Thiele under coach Scott Whitmore. Woodville entered the season after a 14–7 finish and knockout semi-final loss the previous year, with Carlin named in the Warriors’ men’s roster as a 206cm forward-centre.

Woodville used Carlin as part of its 2017 frontcourt rotation and he remained in good form late in the season. He scored 24 points against Central Districts in Round 17, with the performance noted before Woodville’s Round 18 game against Forestville as the Warriors tried to close the season strongly.

COLLEGE

Carlin played college basketball at Casper College during the 2011-12 season before transferring to Westmont, where he competed from 2012 to 2013.

In the 2011-12 season at Casper College, Carlin appeared in 28 games, totaling 31 points, 8 rebounds, and 70 minutes played (2.5 minutes per game).

That 2011-12 Casper College team went 25-9 and reached the Region IX tournament championship game, where Casper finished runner-up after falling to Otero (Colo.) Junior College.

Carlin then moved to Westmont for the 2012-13 season, when the Warriors went 27-6 overall and 12-2 in conference play under head coach John Moore.

In that 2012-13 season at Westmont, Carlin played in all 33 games and made two starts, averaging 4.2 points and 2.5 rebounds per game.

Across the 2012-13 schedule, Carlin recorded a season-high 11 points three times (against UC Merced, William Jessup, and CSU San Marcos), and he posted a season-high 11 rebounds against William Jessup to produce a double-double in that matchup.

Beyond the 2012-13 campaign, Carlin remained at Westmont for additional seasons, including 2013-14 (30 games, 18 starts, 8.2 points per game, 5.8 rebounds per game, 1.3 assists per game, 1.3 blocks per game, 20.7 minutes per game, 39 total blocks, 107-for-182 shooting for 58.8%, nine double-figure scoring games, and a single-game high of 20 points against Simpson) and 2014-15 (started all 36 games, averaged 13.6 points and 7.0 rebounds per game, and earned NAIA Second Team All-American honours while also being recognised as an All-GSAC selection, NAIA All-Tournament Team selection, and a GSAC Player of the Week on January 19, 2015).
