Aleks Maric signs with Spanish team Gran Canaria

Herbalife Gran Canaria 2014 (Spain-Liga Endesa) is readying to make a push for the Spanish League Playoffs and have added Aleks Maric (211 cm, Nebraska’08) to strengthen their frontcourt.

Gran Canaria are no strangers to Australian Boomers with Brad Newley being one of the team’s star players since 2012. The two aussie’s were big part’s of the Boomers success at the 2012 Olympics and 2010 World Championships.

Aleks Maric is still a chance to make the Boomers squad for Rio, how he performs for Gran Canaria could influence his chances to make the squad in 2016.

Maric was a member of the mir national team in 2006, 2009, and 2011-12. This will be his fourth team this season. He began the 2014/15 season playing for Maccabi Electra Tel-Aviv (Israel-Winner League). He played eight games for them in the Euroleague and averaged 2.3 ppg and 2.3 rpg. In six games in the Israeli league Maric averaged 3.2 ppg and 3.8 rpg.

In December 2014 Aleks signed with Galatasaray Liv Hospital Istanbul (Turkey-TBL). His role with the team was minimal and he saw very little time on the floor. He played three games in the Turkish league and seven games in the Euroleague. Maric then later penned with Petrochimi Bandar Imam Harbour (Iran-Superleague). He played eight games for the Iranian club and averaged 9.3 ppg and 6.9 rpg.

Australian center Aleks Maric has signed to play with Herbalife Gran Canaria in the Spanish ACB, a deal that will see him play for his fourth team in the 2014/15 season.

On the eve of the Spanish ACB finals, Gran Canaria have taken the opportunity to bolster their front court by signing the 211cm big man who has previously represented the Australian national team. The signing links Maric with former Australian Boomers team-mate Brad Newley who has been a shining light for the Spanish Eurocup runner-up this season.
