NBL EXPERIENCE

Grant Anticevich made his NBL debut with the South East Melbourne Phoenix at 24 years of age. He scored six points in his first game.

Grant Anticevich signed a one-year contract with South East Melbourne Phoenix on 10 August 2022. Phoenix coach Simon Mitchell expressed excitement, describing Anticevich as “an exciting young Australian forward who has had a very good career in the storied Pac 12. I think his skill sets may be better suited to the pro game, with a more wide-open floor. His catch and shoot, pick and pop game should flourish in the NBL.”

The Phoenix entered NBL23 eager to leave behind memories of an injury-riddled season. Core players like Ryan Broekhoff, Izaya Mauriohooho-Le’Afa, Cameron Gliddon, Reuben Te Rangi, and co-captains Mitch Creek and Kyle Adnam all returned. The team added imports Trey Kell III and Gary Browne to strengthen their backcourt, while big man Alan Williams signed on to replace Zhou Qi.

Qi, initially thought to be heading back to China, made a last-minute decision to re-sign, creating a ‘twin towers’ scenario with Williams, sparking curiosity about how they would work together.

Phoenix’s season opener featured an incomplete lineup, as Broekhoff, Kell, and Browne were sidelined by pre-season injuries, and Qi was two weeks away from joining. This allowed Adnam to step into the starting lineup, where he delivered a career-high scoring performance against Tasmania. Adnam’s efforts (30 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists), combined with Creek’s (23 points and 6 rebounds) and Williams’ (12 points and 7 rebounds), led South East Melbourne to a hard-fought victory over Tasmania (84-79), stirring excitement among fans.

When fully fit, South East Melbourne was one of the league’s most balanced and impressive units, but injuries prevented this lineup from becoming consistent. Qi (6.2 points, 4.4 rebounds, 0.2 assists) managed just nine games before leaving for family reasons, while Kell (12.5 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 2.8 assists) missed five games due to broken ribs, and Broekhoff (10.3 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 0.9 assists) sat out a third of the season with a lingering hamstring injury.

Mitch Creek (23.4 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 2.9 assists) was the only starter to appear in every game, reaching a new level as he covered various team gaps and emerged as an MVP candidate.

With Qi’s early exit, Anticevich (2.1 points and 1.6 rebounds) and fellow rookie Anzac Rissetto (1.2 points and 0.4 rebounds) were given additional minutes. Injuries to perimeter players Broekhoff, Kell, and Browne (12.2 points, 3.6 rebounds, 6.5 assists, and 1.5 steals) limited the core to just 61 of 84 possible games, providing opportunities for Adnam (8.4 points, 1.4 rebounds, and 2.6 assists) and Te Rangi (5.1 points and 3.0 rebounds) to join the starting lineup.

Emerging talents like Junior Madut (4.0 points and 2.3 rebounds) and Owen Foxwell (3.8 points, 1.7 rebounds, and 1.2 steals) also logged significant minutes and delivered solid performances when needed.

Despite a strong start that saw them rise to second on the ladder, injuries again took a toll, with South East Melbourne slipping to fifth place (15-13) and facing Perth in the Play-In Tournament.

Entering the Play-In Qualifier as favourites, despite missing Broekhoff, Phoenix faced a strong challenge from Perth. Bryce Cotton (26 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 steals) and Brady Manek (24 points) delivered explosive performances, ultimately ending the Phoenix’s season with a (106-99) defeat, leaving fans reflecting on yet another close-but-not-enough campaign.

Grant Anticevich currently plays for the New Zealand Breakers and has played 34 games in his NBL career. He has averaged 3.5 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 0.6 assists since entering the league in 2022.
